Look Out SEC: Stutsman and Bowman Set to Wreak Havoc for Sooners Defense

The Oklahoma Sooners defense enters the 2024, as well as the SEC, season with a boost thanks to the return of two key veterans: linebacker Danny Stutsman and safety Billy Bowman.

Both Stutsman and Bowman are considered leaders on the team, and their experience will be crucial as Oklahoma navigates its first season in the competitive Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Stutsman, a rising senior linebacker, is a tackling machine. He boasts 267 career tackles, including 142 solo tackles, 28 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 3 interceptions, and a defensive touchdown. Last season alone, he recorded 104 tackles, even overcoming an ankle injury. His performance against SMU (17 tackles) earned him a National Defensive Player of the Week recognition.

Bowman, a senior strong safety, is known for his athleticism and ability to snatch interceptions. He holds the Oklahoma record for most interception return yards in a single season (2023) and has a knack for turning those interceptions into points, with a total of 3 pick-sixes in his career.

A New Challenge Awaits

The move to the SEC brings steeper challenges. The conference is known for its power offenses with talented skill players and experienced quarterbacks. Stutsman and Bowman will face a significant step up in the level of physical competition compared to the Big 12. Offensive linemen tend to be a bit bigger and stronger, and the conference seems to breed physical running backs. Every conference has its own offensive tendencies, and the Sooners’ defense will need to adapt to formations, play calls, and offensive philosophies specific to the SEC. Stutsman and Bowman will be crucial in helping their teammates understand and adjust to these changes.

Built for the SEC Grind

Despite the challenges, both Stutsman and Bowman have the tools to succeed in the SEC. Stutsman’s experience and tackling prowess are valuable assets against any opponent. His ability to read plays and diagnose offensive schemes quickly will be even more important against a new breed of offenses in the new conference. Bowman’s athleticism allows him to hang with the conference’s speedy receivers, and his instincts for the ball make him a threat to generate turnovers. Their leadership will be vital in keeping the defense focused and motivated throughout the grueling SEC schedule.

With Stutsman’s tackling prowess and Bowman’s ball-hawking presence in the secondary, the Sooners defense has a strong foundation. Their leadership and experience will be invaluable as they guide the team through the challenges of the SEC. While the competition will be fierce, Stutsman and Bowman’s talent and experience position them for success in the conference. Sooner fans can be cautiously optimistic that this defensive duo will be a force to be reckoned with in the SEC.
