The Washington Huskies enter the 2024 season in a state of flux. After a meteoric rise under former coach Kalen DeBoer, the program experienced a massive roster turnover following his departure for Alabama. New head coach Jedd Fisch, renowned for his offensive prowess, inherits a team with significant holes to fill.
Offense: A Work in Progress
Replacing the likes of Michael Penix Jr., Rome Odunze, and an entire offensive line is a daunting task. However, the Huskies have made strides in replenishing the talent pool. The acquisition of Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers, a proven passer, is a major coup. He’ll have a solid target in Jeremiah Hunter, a transfer from Cal, and a promising young receiver in Denzel Boston.
The return of running back Cameron Davis from injury adds depth to the backfield, but the offensive line remains a major concern. The addition of transfer tackle Drew Azzopardi is a step in the right direction, but the unit will need to gel quickly to protect Rogers and open holes for the running game.
Defense: Building Blocks in Place
While the offense undergoes a significant overhaul, the defense retains key pieces. Linebackers Carson Bruener and Alphonzo Tuputala, along with safety Kamren Fabiculanan and cornerback Elijah Jackson, provide a solid foundation. The addition of cornerback Ephesians Prysock from Arizona bolsters the secondary, and the hiring of Steve Belichick as defensive coordinator brings a wealth of experience.
The defensive line is a work in progress after losing its entire starting unit to the NFL. However, the Huskies have added promising transfers like Zach Durfee, Russell Davis II, and Sebastian Valdez, who should contribute immediately.
Special Teams: Stability at Key Positions
The return of kicker Grady Gross and punter Jack McCallister provides stability to the special teams unit. Finding a reliable long snapper will be a priority, but the core of the unit is intact.
Overall Outlook: A Year of Transition
The 2024 season will be a challenging one for the Washington Huskies. While the talent infusion through the transfer portal is encouraging, replacing so many key contributors will take time. Jedd Fisch’s coaching acumen will be put to the test as he navigates the Huskies through this rebuilding phase. Expect growing pains as the team adjusts to a new system and competes in the highly competitive Big Ten Conference.
While the immediate future may be uncertain, the long-term outlook remains promising. With a strong coaching staff and a commitment to building through the transfer portal, Washington has the potential to return to national prominence in the coming years.
