The Utah Utes enter their inaugural season in the Big 12 with lofty expectations. Returning a core group of talented players and bolstered by key additions, the Utes are poised to make an immediate impact on their new conference.
Offense: A High-Powered Attack
The Utes’ offense has the potential to be explosive in 2024. The return of quarterback Cameron Rising, who was having an MVP-caliber season before suffering a knee injury, is a massive boost. With the addition of dynamic wide receiver Dorian Singer from USC, Rising now has a plethora of weapons at his disposal. Tight end Brant Kuithe, who missed the entire 2023 season, is also expected to return, adding another dimension to the passing game.
While the running back position lost key contributor Ja’Quinden Jackson, the Utes still possess a talented group led by Micah Bernard. The offensive line, which struggled at times last season, will need to improve to fully unlock the offense’s potential.
Defense: A Fortress in the Big 12
Utah has consistently fielded strong defenses, and the 2024 unit is no exception. Returning eight starters, the Utes have a solid foundation to build upon. The secondary has been fortified with the additions of Georgia Tech transfer Kenan Johnson and Michigan transfer Cameron Calhoun.
The biggest question mark for the defense is replacing the production of Jonah Elliss, who was a force on the defensive line. However, Logan Fano and linebacker Lander Barton are expected to shoulder a significant portion of the pass-rushing responsibilities.
Special Teams: A Reliable Unit
The Utes return punter Jack Bouwmeester, who excelled at pinning opponents deep in their own territory. Kicker Cole Becker also showed promise with a strong leg. The return game, with Mycah Pittman and Money Parks handling punt and kick returns, has the potential to be a weapon.
Outlook: High Expectations
With a talented roster and a proven coaching staff, the Utah Utes are primed for a successful transition to the Big 12. Anything short of a College Football Playoff berth would likely be considered a disappointment for a team with this much firepower. While injuries derailed their 2023 season, the Utes have a golden opportunity to reclaim their spot among the nation’s elite in 2024.
