Oklahoma narrowly escaped with a 16-12 victory over Houston on Saturday night. The game was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to find offensive consistency. Despite entering the game as heavy favorites, the Sooners faced a surprisingly tough challenge from the Cougars. Houston’s defense played out of it’s mind, limiting Oklahoma’s offense to just two scores and 249 total yards. The Sooners struggled to find a rhythm, committing turnovers and failing to capitalize on scoring chances in the second half.
However, Oklahoma’s defense stepped up, making key plays and limiting Houston’s offensive production. In a true bend but don’t break fashion, the Sooner defense was the catalyst to improving to 2-0 on the season. Gracen Halton’s safety was the only score for Oklahoma in the entire second half.

Ultimately, Oklahoma’s defensive dominance and Houston’s offensive struggles proved to be the deciding factors in the game. However, the Sooners escaped with a narrow victory, but they will need to improve their offensive performance to be successful in the SEC. There seems to be less faith, among Sooner Nation, of that happening.
What Went Well
- Defensive Dominance: Once again, Oklahoma’s defense was a bright spot in the game, limiting Houston’s offense and forcing turnovers. Danny Stutsman led the way with 15 tackles, while other defenders like Billy Bowman, Spears-Jennings, Kendel Dolby, and Samuel Omosigho made key contributions.
- Tight End Depth: Jake Roberts showed that the Sooners have two viable options at tight end, providing a valuable dimension to the offense.
- Gracen Halton’s Emergence: Halton’s performance was a pleasant surprise. He made several key plays, including a potential game-saving safety.
What’s Concerning
- Offensive Struggles: Oklahoma’s offense continues to sputter, and failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Jackson Arnold is struggling, and the running game has been ineffective. Both of those are linked to the next point.
- Offensive Line Concerns: The offensive line has been a major issue for the Sooners two weeks in a row. This unit is struggling to protect Arnold and create running lanes.
- Special Teams Issues: After a strong start last week, Oklahoma’s special teams was inconsistent this week with missed field goals and struggles on punt returns.
The Sooners have just one more tune-up game before they dive into SEC play on September 21st. While their defense has been a bright spot, the offense needs to address several areas of concern. Improving third-down conversions, enhancing offensive line blocking, developing quick reads in the passing game, and refining receiving routes are all essential for the Sooners to compete at a high level in the SEC. Time is running out!
