SEC Power Rankings: Week 6

A new team has claimed the top spot as Week 6 approaches, but there is still some disagreement among our writers.

This week, we’ve seen significant movement in the rankings, with 13 teams changing positions. Ole Miss experienced a significant drop after a surprising loss at home to Kentucky.

Let’s dive into the rankings and see how our writers assessed the SEC teams this week.

Individual Thoughts

Caleb

1. Alabama | Alabama proved that they are the best team in the country Saturday Night. Even when Georgia had all the momentum for the comeback they found ways for big plays.

2. Texas | Texas looked good Saturday against Mississippi State. They’ll have a week off before the RRR.

3. Georgia | Even though they lost they still showed they had a lot of fight and talent to be a top team in the country.

4. Tennessee

5. Missouri

6. Oklahoma

7.  Ole Miss

8. Texas A&M

9. LSU

10.  Kentucky

11.  South Carolina

12.  Arkansas

13.  Auburn

14.  Florida

15. Vanderbilt | Sitting on a bye week was much needed for Vandy. After a heartbreaking loss to Missouri they needed all the time they could get to try and get a game plan ready for Alabama.

16. Mississippi State | Mississippi State still doesn’t look like a great team. Giving up over 500 yards on defense is not ideal for the bulldogs. Jeff Lebby is not off to a great start.

Craig

1. Alabama | The Tide put on quite the performance and held off a fourth quarter comeback in their win over Georgia. Although they needed somewhat of a miracle to win that game, they looked unstoppable for a majority of it.

2. Texas | It took the Longhorns a little bit to get going in their win over Mississippi State. But, once they got going they looked as dominant as ever.

3. Tennessee – No game this week means no movement for the Vols. Time will tell, but I think Tennessee is a legit SEC championship contender.

4. Georgia

5. LSU

6. Missouri

7. Oklahoma

8. Texas A&M

9. Kentucky

10. Ole Miss

11. South Carolina

12. Arkansas

13. Vanderbilt

14. Florida

15. Auburn | Turnovers have hurt the Tigers all season. That was the case once again against the Sooners last week.

16. Mississippi State | The Bulldogs actually put up a little fight against Texas. However, they’re still one of two teams that are 0-2 in conference play.

Matt

1. Alabama | The Tide is rolling! Picking up a win over Georgia was a nice follow up to a road win at Wisconsin. Undoubtedly they have the best resume of any SEC team to date.

2. Georgia | The Bulldogs showed their potential in the second half against Alabama, but the ultimate loss leaves them no claim at the top spot. I’ll hold them here, though, because there’s no sense in punishing them for losing on the road to the top team in the conference.

3. Texas | The Longhorns could have been more dominant in their win over Mississippi State, but they still rolled their way to a win in their SEC debut.

4. Tennessee

5. Missouri

6. LSU

7. Texas A&M

8. Oklahoma

9. Kentucky

10. Ole Miss

11. South Carolina

12. Auburn

13. Arkansas

14. Vanderbilt

15. Florida | An idle week for the Gators didn’t provide for an opportunity to advance in the rankings, not saying they would have advanced had they played, though.

16. Mississippi State | The Bulldogs showed some life against Texas but the long season in Starkville isn’t even halfway over.

Zack

1. Texas | The Longhorns keep rolling, so they stay at the top. They get a week off before taking on OU in the Red River Rivalry.

2. Alabama | The Crimson Tide looked unstoppable in the first half against Georgia before they very nearly gave it away. Still, a win is a win, and it was a mighty good one to beat the Bulldogs in Tuscaloosa.

3. Georgia | It’s hard to move the Bulldogs out of third after nearly completing the comeback against Alabama. Tennessee should probably be in this spot, but they didn’t play last week, so the Volunteers will have to wait at least another week before I move them up.

4. Tennessee

5. Missouri

6. Oklahoma

7. LSU

8. Ole Miss

9. South Carolina

10. Kentucky

11. Texas A&M

12. Florida

13. Arkansas

14. Auburn

15. Vanderbilt | The Commodores had the week off, and there’s no real reason to move them up at all. They stay here.

16. Mississippi State | The Bulldogs finally get a week off from the torture of playing in the SEC. Unfortunately for them, they travel to Georgia next weekend. Oof.
