Red River Rivalry: Can Hawkins And The Sooners Break Through Texas’ Defensive Fortress?

The Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns are set for Saturday’s Red River Rivalry. Texas Longhorns boasts one of the best defenses in the nation and has been exceptional at limiting opposing offenses. Meanwhile, Oklahoma’s offense has faced significant challenges this season and now moves into the most difficult stretch on the schedule. Michael Hawkins Jr., Oklahoma’s true freshman quarterback, could be the biggest factor in turning the momentum in this game towards the Oklahoma sideline but, make no mistake about it, the task will be daunting. He has certainly shown potential but will need to elevate his game to lead the Sooners to victory against Texas’ tough defense. Hawkins’ ability to make accurate throws, avoid turnovers, and utilize his athleticism will be crucial.

Texas’ Dominant Defense: A Challenge for Oklahoma

Texas boasts one of the best defenses in the nation. The Longhorns lead the SEC in scoring defense and rank second nationally, limiting opponents to an average of just 7.0 points per game so far in 2024.

One of the key contributors to Texas’ defensive success has been true freshman EDGE Colin Simmons. A force to be reckoned with, Simmons is leading all FBS freshmen with 4.0 sacks and ranks seventh overall in the SEC in total sacks. His ability to pressure the quarterback and disrupt the backfield has been a significant asset for the Longhorns.

Texas has also excelled at creating turnovers, recording seven interceptions through five games this season. This opportunistic defense has helped to limit opposing offenses and give the Longhorns additional offensive possessions.

Finally, Texas has been tough on opponents when it comes to converting on third down. The Longhorns rank eighth nationally in third down conversion defense. They have been able to get off the field on key downs, limiting opposing offensive drives with a knack for pressure on quarterbacks.

Oklahoma’s offense will undoubtedly face a tough challenge against this Texas defense. The Sooners will need to execute their game plan flawlessly and limit turnovers to have a chance at success. That brings us to the struggles OU experienced through month of September.

Oklahoma’s Offensive Struggles

Oklahoma’s offense has faced significant challenges this season, ranking 118th nationally in passing yards per game, 100th in rushing yards per game, and 69th in scoring.

One of the primary contributors to Oklahoma’s offensive struggles has been their offensive line. Injuries and attrition have impacted their depth and performance, leading to difficulties in protecting the quarterback and creating running lanes. As a result, OU quarterbacks have been sacked fourteen times this season, and the team is averaging just 3.8 yards per rush attempt.

Michael Hawkins Jr.: A Potential Spark for Oklahoma’s Offense

Michael Hawkins Jr., Oklahoma’s true freshman quarterback, has the potential to be a game-changer for the Sooners’ offense. His athleticism and playmaking ability bring a different dimension to the team.

Hawkins has shown flashes of brilliance in his limited playing time, completing 64% of his passes and rushing for 91 yards with a touchdown in Oklahoma’s two SEC games. His quick release and decision-making have opened up opportunities for Oklahoma’s receivers and helped to stretch the field.

However, to lead Oklahoma to victory against Texas, Hawkins Jr. will need to elevate his game to another level. He will face a tough Texas defense that is going to try a bait him into making mistakes. He’ll not only need to make accurate throws, but also avoid turnovers, and utilize his athleticism to extend plays and create scoring opportunities. The reality is that Saturday’s Red River Rivalry is going to tell us if the young quarterback truly is the spark that Oklahoma’s offense needs to compete not only against Texas, but for the remainder of the SEC schedule.
