2024 Heartland Sports SEC Power Rankings: Week 8

Week 7 of the college football season gave us a little more stability in our power rankings. The Top Six remain in the same position as a week ago, and in total there are only six teams in a different spot than they were last week. We have no ties this week and found unanimity on two different occasions (Florida and Mississippi State). That said, we were close to being unanimous with Texas at #1, LSU at #6, Oklahoma at #9, and Auburn at #15. On each occasion, one of our writers voted differently.

Individual Rankings

Caleb

1. Texas | Texas has looked good this season. With the RRR coming up the Longhorns look to flex their number 1 status in Dallas.

2. Alabama | I know Alabama is coming off a loss, but I still think very highly of this team. They found themselves in a trap game and just didn’t look the part coming off a big win against Georgia.

3. Georgia | Georgia bounces back after a tough Alabama win with a win over Auburn. Carson Beck did a way better job at protecting the football this week.

15. Auburn | Auburn had the week off as they look to get ready for Missouri.

16. Mississippi State | Mississippi State played Georgia closer than most people thought, but still couldn’t pull off a win.

Craig 

1. Texas | The Longhorns looked dominant in their win over Oklahoma. They still haven’t been challenged by anyone. Will that change with Georgia next on the schedule? 

2. Georgia | The Bulldogs held off Mississippi State’s second half comeback attempt in what looked like a game that might get out of hand at first. Regardless, Georgia still looks to be one of the best teams in all of football. 

3. Texas A&M | The Aggies had the week off. They’ve got an easy one next against Mississippi State. You can question the strength of schedule, but they’re one of a few unbeaten teams in conference play.

15. Auburn | No movement for Auburn as they had the week off. 

16. Mississippi State | Mississippi State put up a good fight against Georgia but remains winless in conference play. 

Matt 

1. Georgia | Carson Beck passed for a career-high 459 yards and three touchdowns against Mississippi State as the Bulldogs faced depth issues at the running back position. Georgia has possibly its biggest test of the season this Saturday. 

2. Texas | Texas overcame an early challenge by Oklahoma’s defense to the Red River Rivalry in a very lopsided final score of 34-3. The Sooners have no answers for the Longhorn defense but UT will face a completely different challenge this week. 

3. Texas A&M | The Aggies were idle last weekend.

15. South Carolina | Turnovers continue to kill the Gamecocks and the four times they gave the ball over at Alabama may have been the most frustrating and costly of the season. 

16. Mississippi State | The Bulldogs entered last weekend allowing an average of 31.6 points per game — Georgia topped that on a three-play drive to open the second half. Mississippi State gave up 605 yards, a season high for Georgia.

Zack

1. Texas | The Longhorns pretty much dominated from start to finish in the Red River Rivalry, and now they get a primetime matchup at home against Georgia.

2. Georgia | The Bulldogs struggled a little too much with the other Bulldogs, but they pulled out the win. We’ll get a better picture of the top of the SEC after this weekend in Austin.

3. Alabama | The Crimson Tide nearly gave their game against South Carolina away, but they held on for the win. Now they travel to Tennessee to take on the Vols.

15. Auburn | A week off keeps the Tigers right in place. Now they travel to Missouri to take on the other Tigers.

16. Mississippi State | Despite staying within striking distance of Georgia, Mississippi State doesn’t move from the bottom.
