The season is still very young, but the Oklahoma City Thunder have emerged as a dominant force in the NBA, thanks to their dynamic offense and suffocating defense. Led by the duo of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren, the Thunder have been a joy to watch through the first three games. Taking the floor tomorrow night as the only undefeated team in the West, OKC isn’t just picking up where they left off last year, they seem to be several steps ahead, and here’s why.
A Deadly Duo:
- Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: SGA’s ability to score from anywhere on the court and create opportunities for his teammates makes him one of the league’s most dangerous players. It’s never too early for MVP discussions surrounding a player of his caliber, and SGA is definitely putting on a show, averaging 28.7 points per game, while shooting nearly 45% from the floor.
- Chet Holmgren: The young big man has been impressive, showcasing his versatility on both ends of the floor. His ability to shoot, pass, and defend has made him a key contributor to the Thunder’s success. His development from year one to year two is easily the most identifiable factor in OKC’s early success this season.
A Versatile Offense:
- The Thunder’s offense is not just reliant on their star duo. They have a deep roster of talented players, including Jalen Williams (18.7 PPG), Aaron Wiggins (10.7 PPG) and Luguentz Dort (9.3 PPG), who can all contribute offensively.
- Their ability to space the floor, cut to the basket, and execute pick-and-roll plays makes them a team that’s nearly impossible to to defend when they’re in a rhythm.
A Stifling Defense:
- The Thunder’s defense has been equally impressive, led by their length and athleticism. They can switch onto different positions and guard multiple players effectively. Holmgren leads the NBA in shot blocks per game (4).
- Led by Holmgren’s average of 13 rebounds, they’re crashing the boards and pulling down 49 rebounds per game.
- Their ability to force turnovers and limit opponents’ scoring opportunities has been a major factor in their success. SGA is tied for the league lead in steals per game (3) and Cason Wallace is right behind him at 2.7 steals per game.
The Thunder’s combination of offensive firepower and defensive prowess makes them not only a serious contender in the Western Conference, but a team that’s quickly rising to be frontrunners. With a bright future ahead, the Thunder are poised to make a short run at the top of they league, they’re going be a dominant force in the NBA for years to come.
