The 2024 season may be in the rearview mirror, but Oklahoma fans can find plenty of reasons for optimism as the Sooners prepare for the 2025 campaign. The disappointment of the past season, marked by injuries, inconsistent play, and coaching changes, has given way to a renewed sense of hope and a focus on the future.
The arrival of offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle marks a fresh start for the Oklahoma offense. The addition of key transfers, including a highly-touted quarterback, has injected new talent into the receiving corps. While the offensive line still faces challenges, the infusion of talent through the transfer portal provides a glimmer of hope for improved performance in 2025.
Former Cal receiver Josiah Martin is the latest transfer to land in Norman. Oklahoma has reloaded its receiving corps through the portal, and has landed a total of nine offensive players from the portal, including the top overall quarterback. Equally important, the first portal season has closed and Oklahoma still has an incredibly strong stable of running backs.
It looks like the Sooners have generally upgraded from a talent perspective, they just need a competent offensive scheme to make it all work. That’s where Arbuckle comes in. He has a track record of success, he just needs to see it continue. Things can’t get much worse than they were in 2024.
When the calendar turned to 2025, Sooner Nation should have taken a collective sigh of relief. The injuries, the failures, the disappointments, and uncertainty of 2024 are now officially behind us. A new year brings new promise and if you’re looking for something to really boost your confidence then look no further than the defense.
The Oklahoma defense returns a core of talented players, providing a strong foundation for continued success. Key returners like Robert Spears-Jennings, Damonic Williams, and a potential return of R Mason Thomas bolster the defensive line. The linebacker corps, led by talented players like Kobie McKinzie, Kip Lewis, and Jaren Kanak, has the potential to be a dominant force in the SEC.
While challenges remain, the 2025 season presents a unique opportunity for the Sooners to rebound and start the climb back towards the top of the college football landscape. With a renewed focus, a revamped offensive scheme, and a talented roster, Oklahoma fans have reason to be optimistic about the future.
