Beyond Knowles: Exploring Oklahoma’s Other Potential Defensive Coordinator Candidates

The Oklahoma Sooners have moved into a critical offseason, thanks to the unexpected departure of defensive coordinator Zac Alley to West Virginia. While the move undoubtedly disappointed players, coaches, and fans, it also presents a unique opportunity for head coach Brent Venables to significantly upgrade his staff.

Early reports suggest that Oklahoma is casting a wide net in their search for a replacement, with Ohio State’s defensive coordinator Jim Knowles emerging as a top target. Knowles, renowned for his innovative defensive schemes, has transformed the Ohio State defense into one of the nation’s elite units.

Landing Knowles would be a major coup for the Sooners. Pairing his defensive brilliance with Venables’ own defensive expertise could create a formidable combination, elevating Oklahoma’s defense to an even higher level.

However, securing Knowles will not be easy. He is one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in college football, and Ohio State would undoubtedly do everything in their power to retain him, especially after a successful season.

Furthermore, Knowles may have specific demands regarding his coaching staff. He might insist on bringing in his own preferred assistants, potentially leading to even more changes within the Oklahoma defensive coaching unit.

Beyond Knowles

While Jim Knowles remains a prominent name in the Oklahoma defensive coordinator search, other potential candidates are emerging.

Wes Goodwin, former Clemson defensive coordinator, has been consistently mentioned as a strong contender. Goodwin previously served on Venables’ staff at Clemson, building a strong rapport with the Oklahoma head coach. His recent dismissal from Clemson, following a successful tenure that included a top-25 national ranking in 2023, has only increased speculation about a potential reunion with Venables in Norman.

However, the lack of concrete movement in the Goodwin-to-Oklahoma sweepstakes has raised some eyebrows. If Venables is truly intent on landing a “big name” defensive coordinator, Goodwin’s current free agent status might suggest he may not be the top choice.

Internal Candidates: Hall and the Current Staff

Another strong contender is current Oklahoma safeties coach Brandon Hall. Hall boasts impressive experience as a defensive coordinator at Troy, Jacksonville State, and Central Oklahoma. His familiarity with Venables’ system and the Oklahoma program makes him a logical internal candidate.

Furthermore, Venables has expressed his preference for coaches who understand and can effectively implement his defensive philosophy. Promoting Hall would ensure continuity within the defensive scheme and allow Venables to maintain a high level of control.

The current Oklahoma staff also includes co-defensive coordinators Todd Bates and Jay Valai, both of whom could be considered for the role. However, the pursuit of a high-profile external candidate like Knowles could potentially lead to changes within the current coaching staff.

Ultimately, the decision on who will lead the Oklahoma defense in 2025 will be a critical one for Venables and the Sooners, which is why the decision shouldn’t be rushed. When you consider the dumpster fire that the offensive coordinator hire turned into last offseason, a patient approach is probably more appreciated.
