Patty Gasso Takes the Helm: USA Softball’s New Olympic Coach

In a historic moment for the sport, University of Oklahoma head softball coach Patty Gasso has been named the head coach of the USA Softball Women’s National Team (WNT), USA Softball announced Monday. Gasso, selected by the USA Softball Selection Review panel, will guide Team USA through the 2025-28 quadrennial cycle, culminating in the LA28 Olympic Games.

A Career-Defining Achievement

Gasso, a legendary figure in collegiate softball, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity:

“It is truly a remarkable moment in my career and a dream come true to be asked to coach Team USA,” said Gasso. “This is the highest honor I could ever receive, and I’m humbled by and thankful for the confidence USA Softball has in me. I have an intense passion to make Team USA the best it can be to help win the gold medal in 2028.”

Gasso’s appointment marks a significant milestone as she becomes only the seventh female head coach in WNT history. She follows in the footsteps of Rosalie Sorenson (1970), Marge Ricker (1982), Carol Spanks (1987), Shirley Topley (1991), Margie Wright (1998), and Heather Tarr (2021).

Proven Success on the Diamond

Gasso’s resume speaks for itself. Entering her 31st season as head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, she has built an unparalleled dynasty. Under her leadership, OU has won an astounding eight national championships, including a record-breaking four consecutive titles from 2021 to 2024. Her Sooners have appeared in 17 Women’s College World Series (WCWS), cementing her status as one of the greatest coaches in softball history.

Her career statistics further highlight her dominance:

  • Career Record: 1,676-411-3 (.802)
  • Oklahoma Record: 1,515-352-2 (.811)
  • Big 12 Conference’s All-Time Winningest Coach (in any sport)
  • 15 Big 12 Regular Season Titles
  • 9 Big 12 Postseason Titles
  • 84 All-Americans Coached
  • 16 Big 12 Player of the Year Honorees
  • 9 Big 12 Pitcher of the Year Selections
  • 201 All-Conference Picks

USA Softball’s Confidence in Gasso

USA Softball CEO Craig Cress expressed his excitement for Gasso’s appointment:

“USA Softball is proud to announce that Coach Gasso will lead our Women’s National Team for the 2025-2028 quad. Throughout her career, Coach Gasso has made a significant impact on the softball community and has greatly contributed to the development of the sport. We are confident that her skills, knowledge, and experience will enhance our program, and we look forward to supporting Coach Gasso and the Women’s National Team as they strive to represent the U.S. with pride on the highest stage.”

Gasso’s previous experience with USA Softball includes coaching the U.S. Women’s Elite Team during the World Cup of Softball and contributing to multiple training camps and selection trials. Her extensive knowledge of the game and ability to develop elite talent make her the ideal leader for Team USA.

A Homecoming for Olympic Softball

Adding to the excitement, the 2028 Olympic softball competition will be held at Devon Park in Oklahoma City, a venue deeply tied to Gasso’s career. Formerly known as USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium, Devon Park has hosted the WCWS since 1990 and holds 13,000 fans. The decision to host the games in Oklahoma City instead of Los Angeles means Gasso will be leading Team USA on home turf.

However, some critics have pointed out that softball athletes will miss the traditional Olympic Village experience, as their competition will take place away from the main Olympic venues in LA. Despite this, Gasso’s familiarity with the stadium and the fervent Oklahoma softball fanbase could provide Team USA with a distinct home-field advantage.

What’s Next for Gasso and the Sooners?

While preparing to lead Team USA, Gasso remains committed to continuing Oklahoma’s dominance in collegiate softball. The Sooners kick off their 2025 season this Thursday against CSUN in San Diego, Calif., at 5:30 p.m. CT. With another championship in sight, Gasso will look to add to her already legendary legacy before taking on the world stage.

A Lasting Legacy

Gasso’s impact on the game extends beyond championships. Her ability to develop players both on and off the field has been a hallmark of her tenure. Under her leadership, the Sooners have produced 180 academic all-conference selections and 23 Academic All-Americans. Her influence has been so profound that OU honored her with a statue in front of Love’s Stadium in Norman, Oklahoma—a testament to her lasting impact on the sport.

As she embarks on this new journey with USA Softball, there’s no doubt that Patty Gasso will continue to elevate the game and inspire the next generation of softball players. With a relentless pursuit of excellence, Gasso now sets her sights on Olympic gold in LA28.
