The Oklahoma Sooners kicked off their 2025 baseball season in dominant fashion, sweeping Lehigh in a three-game series at L. Dale Mitchell Park. With an explosive offense and a commanding pitching performance, OU outscored the Mountain Hawks 36-7 across the weekend, securing victories of 11-3, 13-3 (8 innings), and 12-1.
Head coach Skip Johnson, now in his eighth season at the helm, praised his team’s execution and focus. “I thought we set the tone early, scored runs to get our pitchers comfortable, and the bullpen did a great job shutting things down,” Johnson said. “Our hitters did an excellent job of recognizing pitches and capitalizing on key moments. I’m really proud of how the guys stayed engaged and supported each other throughout the series.”
Game 1: Sooners Roll to an 11-3 Victory
The season opener saw junior right-hander and preseason All-American Kyson Witherspoon put on a masterclass, striking out nine batters over five innings while allowing just two earned runs on two hits. Witherspoon’s dominant outing set the tone, with Oklahoma’s bats quickly following suit.
OU’s offense ignited in the second inning, as junior transfer Dayton Tockey smashed a solo home run in his first at-bat as a Sooner. The floodgates opened in the fifth inning when Oklahoma plated six runs, fueled by a two-run double from junior Trey Gambill and an inside-the-park home run by freshman Kyle Branch—his first collegiate hit. Sophomore Jaxon Willits added a solo shot in the sixth, while Easton Carmichael’s sacrifice fly in the eighth capped off the scoring.
The Sooners’ pitching depth shined as well. Senior James Hitt and freshman Michael Catalano combined for four shutout innings in relief, with Catalano striking out four in two perfect frames.
Game 2: Sooners Use Early Surge to Cruise to 13-3 Win (8 Innings)
Just hours after their opening victory, the Sooners returned to action and continued their offensive onslaught. Sophomore left-hander Cameron Johnson made his first start for OU and delivered a steady performance, going five innings with three strikeouts while allowing just two runs on two hits.
Oklahoma’s bats wasted no time, putting up four runs in the first inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Carmichael, Willis, and Tockey. Carmichael extended the lead with a three-run homer in the second—his first of the year—giving the Sooners an early 7-0 advantage.
The Mountain Hawks attempted to fight back with two runs in the third, but OU’s bullpen held strong. Junior lefty Cade Crossland made his debut with two scoreless innings, and senior righty Reid Hensley closed things out with two strikeouts in the eighth.
The Sooners sealed the run-rule win in the eighth inning with a two-run double from junior transfer Christian Hoffman, who delivered in a clutch moment. Carmichael finished the game 3-for-5 with five RBIs, matching his career-high. Gambill also had a perfect 3-for-3 night, while sophomore Jason Walk tied his personal best with three hits.
Game 3: Oklahoma Caps Off the Sweep with a 12-1 Victory
Oklahoma left no doubt in the series finale, dismantling Lehigh 12-1 in just seven innings. The Sooners tallied 13 hits, while the pitching staff limited the Mountain Hawks to a mere three.
Lehigh struck first with a run in the opening frame, but Oklahoma responded immediately with three runs in the bottom half. Willits brought in a run with a sacrifice fly before Carmichael launched his second homer in as many days. The Sooners extended their lead in the second when a bases-loaded walk to Sam Christiansen and a sacrifice fly from Gambill made it 5-1.
A three-run third inning, highlighted by a bunt single from Walk and an RBI triple from Carmichael, put the game further out of reach. The Sooners tacked on four more in the sixth, with Willis and Branch contributing key hits before sophomore two-way player Gavyn Jones drove in two more runs to put OU in run-rule territory.
On the mound, right-hander Malachi Witherspoon was stellar, striking out six over five innings while allowing just one run. Jones and junior transfer Jason Rodin combined for two scoreless innings in relief, securing the dominant victory.
