The No. 2-ranked Oklahoma Sooners extended their undefeated streak to 12-0 with a commanding 8-1 victory over Wichita State on Sunday at Love’s Field. Behind a dominant pitching performance from Sam Landry and key contributions at the plate, the Sooners controlled the game from start to finish.
Landry Shines in the Circle
Right-hander Sam Landry delivered another stellar performance in the circle, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out 10 in 5.2 innings of work. The Louisiana transfer also reached a career milestone, recording her 500th strikeout in the fourth inning.
“I really loved what Sam did today,” said head coach Patty Gasso. “Her changeup equalized things, and she really moved the ball well against a very good hitting team.”
Landry’s lone blemish came in the fifth inning when Wichita State’s Elle Eck launched a solo home run to right field. However, the veteran pitcher quickly regained control, inducing a groundout to retire the side.
Freshman left-hander Audrey Lowry sealed the win by retiring the final three Shockers in the seventh inning after taking over in the sixth.
Fast Start Fuels Sooners
Oklahoma wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, taking advantage of aggressive baserunning and Wichita State miscues in the first inning.
Abby Dayton and Ella Parker set the tone with back-to-back walks before Kasidi Pickering drove in Dayton with an RBI single. Parker then stole home on a throwing error, and Pickering later scored on a passed ball, giving the Sooners a 3-0 lead after one frame.
“We love to score first,” Gasso said. “That’s one of our goals. It’s important to set the tone early.”
Emerling Breaks Slump with Big Day at the Plate
Catcher Isabela Emerling snapped an 0-for-14 slump in emphatic fashion, crushing a solo home run to center field in the second inning to extend OU’s lead to 4-0. The North Carolina transfer later doubled in the fourth inning, driving in Nelly McEnroe-Marinas and helping the Sooners build a 6-0 advantage.
“I was just thinking, hit the ball hard up the middle,” Emerling said. “My teammates have had my back these past few weekends, so it felt great to contribute.”
Emerling’s breakout performance was a welcome sight for Oklahoma, as she now has three home runs this season.
Additional Offensive Highlights
The Sooners continued their offensive pressure throughout the game.
- Tia Milloy contributed two hits and an RBI, including a double down the right-field line.
- Ailana Agbayani drove in a run with an RBI single in the fifth.
- Oklahoma stole five bases, with Parker leading the way with two swipes, bringing her season total to five.
Despite the solid offensive output, Gasso believes the team still has room for improvement.
“We’re a good team, and we’re playing well,” she said. “But there’s something we’re missing—something we’re going to find. We need to develop that savvy, bow-up mentality we’ve had the last four years.”
Defensive Excellence
Oklahoma’s defense was sharp, committing just one error and making several key plays to back up their pitchers. Landry worked her way out of a jam in the third inning by striking out three straight batters with a runner in scoring position.
Key Takeaways
- Sam Landry reached 500 career strikeouts, further cementing her role as a dominant force in the Sooners’ rotation.
- Emerling’s resurgence at the plate provides a much-needed boost as Oklahoma seeks consistent production from its lineup.
- Aggressive baserunning continues to be a weapon, with Oklahoma swiping 17 bases so far this season.
- Oklahoma remains perfect against Wichita State under Gasso, improving to 42-0 in head-to-head matchups.
Looking Ahead
The Sooners will conclude the Norman Tournament with a Monday doubleheader against Bowling Green at 11 a.m. and Abilene Christian at 2 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
Oklahoma will later face Wichita State again on March 26 in Kansas, providing the Shockers with a chance at redemption. However, with the way the Sooners are playing, it will take a monumental effort to knock them off their perfect trajectory.
For now, the Sooners remain locked in, continuing their pursuit of another dominant season under Gasso’s leadership.
