After a dominant weekend against top-tier competition Oklahoma’s national standing is about to change. Capping off an impressive tournament run, the Sooners secured a dramatic 5-4 victory over No. 2 Virginia in a 12-inning showdown, making history in the process.
Oklahoma started the weekend with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Minnesota before stunning No. 7 Oregon State with an 8-4 triumph. Their final test came against a powerful Cavaliers squad, and the Sooners rose to the occasion, proving they belong among college baseball’s elite.
A Slow Start Turns Into a Thrilling Comeback
Virginia took the early lead in the second inning when a defensive miscue allowed the Cavaliers to capitalize. Catcher Scott Mudler’s throwing error on a bunt attempt led to the first run of the game, and a few moments later, Luke Hanson laced a two-run single to right, pushing the score to 3-0.
For several innings, Oklahoma struggled to generate offense, but the tide turned in the fourth when Jaxon Willits launched a solo homer to left-center, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The Sooners kept the pressure on in the fifth, as Kyle Branch singled and Mudler followed with a double to bring him home. Jason Walk then delivered another clutch hit, an RBI double down the left-field line, tying the game at 3-3.
Trading Blows Late
With momentum shifting in their favor, Oklahoma took its first lead in the seventh. Branch led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout, and was brought home on a pinch-hit RBI single by Dayton Tockey, making it 4-3.
However, Virginia refused to go down quietly. The Cavaliers answered in the eighth when Jacob Ference walked, advanced on a deep flyout, and scored on Trey Wells’ sacrifice fly to knot the game at 4-4.
From that point, both teams engaged in a tense pitcher’s duel. Oklahoma’s bullpen stepped up in a big way, with Dylan Crooks tossing three scoreless innings and Jaden Barfield shutting down Virginia in the 12th during his collegiate debut.
Sooner Magic in the 12th
Oklahoma’s offense finally broke through in the 12th inning. Mudler worked a leadoff walk, forcing Virginia to make a pitching change. Moments later, Dasan Harris legged out an infield single, giving the Sooners two baserunners with no outs.
That set the stage for Dawson Willis, who executed a perfect bunt on a 3-1 count. The Cavaliers’ defense rushed the play, but their throw to first sailed wide, allowing pinch-runner Brayden Horton to sprint home for the game-winning run. With that, Oklahoma walked off with a 5-4 victory in the longest game in Round Rock Classic history.
Dominant Pitching Secures the Win
Despite the early deficit, Oklahoma’s pitching staff showcased resilience. Starter Cam Johnson settled in after a rough second inning, striking out the side in the third and retiring the final six batters he faced. Relievers Gavyn Jones, Jamie Hitt, and Michael Catalano kept the Sooners in the game, shutting down Virginia’s potent lineup.
The biggest contributions came from Crooks and Barfield. Crooks threw 42 pitches over three scoreless frames, escaping multiple jams, while Barfield showed incredible poise in the top of the 12th, setting up the dramatic finish.
What’s Next for the Sooners?
With the victory, Oklahoma improves to 6-0 on the season, securing back-to-back wins over Top 10 teams. Their impressive showing in Round Rock will surely vault them into the Top 10 of the national rankings.
The Sooners now return home for a two-game series against Texas Southern on February 25-26 before hosting Cal State-Northridge for a weekend set. If this weekend was any indication, Oklahoma is a force to be reckoned with in college baseball, and the rest of the country is taking notice.
