Oklahoma junior right-hander Kyson Witherspoon has been named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Pitcher of the Week following a standout performance against Minnesota at the Round Rock Classic.
Witherspoon delivered a career-best performance on Friday, striking out 12 batters without issuing a single walk in Oklahoma’s 3-2 victory over the Golden Gophers. His dominant outing set the tone for the No. 16 Sooners, who went undefeated on the weekend with marquee wins over No. 7 Oregon State and No. 2 Virginia.
A Statement Performance on the Mound
Pitching seven innings of one-run baseball, Witherspoon allowed just three hits, shaking off an early solo home run in the first inning. After that, he locked in, retiring 13 consecutive batters before finally allowing a single in the fifth.
The Preseason All-SEC selection has been lights-out to start the season, boasting a 2-0 record with 21 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched. He holds a 2.25 ERA (3 ER) and has surrendered just two walks. Dating back to last season, he has fanned at least six batters in nine of his last 10 starts.
Making History for the Sooners
Witherspoon’s SEC Pitcher of the Week award is the first in Oklahoma baseball history since the program joined the conference. It also marks the first weekly honor of his career, further solidifying his status as a key ace in the Sooners’ rotation.
