The No. 16 Oklahoma Sooners (8-0) continue their red-hot start to the 2025 season with a three-game series against CSUN at L. Dale Mitchell Park. After an impressive 8-0 start, including a sweep of Texas Southern and an undefeated run through the Round Rock Classic, the Sooners will aim to extend their winning streak against the Matadors (2-4), who are making their first-ever trip to Norman.
Oklahoma’s Red-Hot Start
The Sooners enter the weekend having outscored opponents 72-25 and coming off an impressive sweep of Texas Southern. Their 8-0 start is the best since 2010, with significant wins over No. 7 Oregon State and No. 2 Virginia at the Round Rock Classic. Oklahoma’s pitching staff has been dominant, striking out 84 batters while maintaining a 2.96 ERA. RHP Kyson Witherspoon, with his 21 strikeouts and 2.25 ERA, has been especially stellar and will be one to watch on the mound this weekend.
On offense, Oklahoma has been equally potent. Freshman Kyle Branch leads the team with a .452 batting average, followed closely by Sam Christiansen, who boasts a .450 average and has walked 15 times already this season. The Sooners have also been aggressive on the base paths, swiping 22 bags in their first eight games.
CSUN’s Road to Norman
The Matadors, under the leadership of former Oklahoma All-Big 12 infielder Eddie Cornejo, are looking to rebound after a tough start to the season. They were swept by BYU in their home opener but found some momentum in the series finale, with freshman Colton Boardman and sophomore Matthew Pena both contributing with key performances. Pena, who leads the team with 10 RBI, has been a major power threat with two home runs already.
CSUN’s pitching staff has been shaky to start the year, but they do have promising arms like junior Hayden Hall, who has yet to allow a run in 2.2 innings of work, and sophomore Logan Miller, who has a solid 1.93 ERA through 4.2 innings.
What to Watch
- Oklahoma’s Pitching: Kyson Witherspoon’s dominance on the mound has been a major storyline this season. He will look to continue his strong start and build on his career-high 12 strikeouts last weekend against Minnesota.
- Matadors’ Power Bats: CSUN will rely on their top hitters like Pena and Boardman to challenge Oklahoma’s pitching staff. Can they capitalize on any mistakes from the Sooners’ hurlers?
- Base Stealing: Oklahoma’s aggressive approach on the base paths has already led to 22 stolen bases. CSUN’s defense will need to be sharp to contain the Sooners’ speed.

Series Outlook
Oklahoma enters this weekend as a clear favorite, but CSUN will be looking to make a statement in their first-ever meeting with the Sooners in Norman. After a tough start to the season, the Matadors will need a strong showing to avoid dropping further in the standings. For Oklahoma, continuing their undefeated streak and maintaining their momentum heading into SEC play is critical.
