The No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners suffered their first loss of the season in humbling fashion Tuesday night, falling 11-0 in seven innings to No. 21 Dallas Baptist at Horner Ballpark. The loss snapped Oklahoma’s perfect start to the season, dropping them to 11-1, while the Patriots improved to 9-3.
In a game that showcased DBU’s power at the plate and dominance on the mound, the Sooners struggled to generate offense and were unable to keep the Patriots from capitalizing on the windy conditions. With gusts reaching up to 50 mph, DBU belted four home runs, the most given up by Oklahoma this season, after entering the contest having surrendered just two long balls total through their first 11 games.
DBU Bats Overpower Oklahoma
After OU opened the game with a pair of walks and a single from Easton Carmichael, DBU starter Ryan Borberg settled in and silenced the Sooners’ offense. The right-hander retired 13 consecutive batters from the first inning into the sixth, finishing with a dominant line of five scoreless innings, seven strikeouts, one hit allowed, and two walks.
DBU wasted no time setting the tone, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After Grant Jay reached on a single, Chayton Krauss launched a two-run homer to right field, marking his first of the season. Krauss wasn’t done, though, as he repeated the feat in the third inning, sending another two-run blast to nearly the exact same spot, extending the Patriots’ lead to 4-0.
The biggest blow came in the fourth inning when DBU erupted for five runs, all with two outs. Nathan Humphreys sparked the rally with a double down the line, followed by an intentional walk to Jay. Tom Poole delivered an RBI single before Krauss added to his monster night with a two-run single of his own. The inning was punctuated by Michael Dattalo’s two-run home run, his first of the season, pushing DBU’s lead to 9-0.
Oklahoma’s Pitching Struggles for First Time in 2025
OU starter Cade Crossland (1-1) took the loss in his first start of the season. The left-hander, who had previously shined in relief outings, struggled against DBU’s potent lineup, surrendering six runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings. While he did record six strikeouts, three walks and the Patriots’ ability to capitalize on mistakes proved costly.
Gavyn Jones came in for brief relief duty but was unable to record an out, allowing two more runs. Jason Bodin and Beau Sampson finished the night for the Sooners, but not before DBU tacked on two more runs in the sixth on a two-run homer by Jay, making it an 11-0 contest.
For Oklahoma, the 11 runs allowed were a season high, as they had previously not given up more than five runs in any game this year.
Sooners’ Offense Shut Down
A typically explosive OU offense was completely neutralized on Tuesday night. After Carmichael’s single in the first, Oklahoma did not record another hit until the sixth, when Jason Walk singled to right. That was the extent of the Sooners’ offense, as they managed just two hits for the game and did not advance a runner past second base after the first inning.
Borberg’s dominance set the tone, and reliever Mason Peters continued the trend. Peters entered in the sixth and struck out three straight batters in his first inning of work before adding two more strikeouts in a perfect seventh inning to close the game.
DBU’s Historic Night
- The 11-0 win marked DBU’s largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent since a 21-3 win over No. 22 Sam Houston on March 24, 2018.
- The Patriots improved to 19-13 against Oklahoma since joining NCAA Division I in 2004.
- DBU retired 14 consecutive Sooners from the first to the sixth inning.
- Krauss’ six RBIs set a new single-game high for the program this season.
- Grant Jay’s home run was the 49th of his collegiate career, moving him into second place in DBU history.
What’s Next for Oklahoma
While the loss is a frustrating one, it is only a single game in the midst of a long season. The Sooners will look to regroup as they return home to Norman for a three-game weekend series against Sam Houston State, starting Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT. The series will be streamed on SECN+ and broadcast on 99.3 FM/1400 AM The REF and The Varsity Network app.
Oklahoma will have another shot at revenge when they host DBU for a rematch in Norman on April 8. Until then, Skip Johnson’s squad will aim to get back on track and put this loss behind them as they continue their quest for a strong 2025 campaign.
