Here’s Why Oklahoma and Tennessee Are Wearing Teal Today

The Oklahoma Sooners and Tennessee Lady Vols are facing off in a crucial SEC softball showdown today, but something looks a little different about their uniforms. Both teams, along with every other SEC softball program, incorporated teal into their uniforms as part of the league’s annual “All for Alex” weekend. This initiative honors the legacy of former Mississippi State softball player Alex Wilcox, who courageously battled ovarian cancer before passing away in 2018.

The Meaning Behind the Teal Accents

Teal is the official color of ovarian cancer awareness, and since 2019, SEC softball teams have dedicated a weekend each season to honor Wilcox’s memory and raise awareness for the disease. The initiative was spearheaded by LSU head coach Beth Torina and Mississippi State head coach Samantha Ricketts, receiving full approval from the conference’s coaches in 2019. Although the campaign was initially delayed due to the cancellation of the 2020 season, it has since become a staple in SEC softball.

On this special weekend, all 15 SEC teams either wear full teal uniforms or incorporate teal accents, such as ribbons, socks, and helmet decals. The Mississippi State Bulldogs, Wilcox’s alma mater, traditionally don white jerseys with teal lettering in her honor. Beyond the SEC, multiple non-conference programs across the country have also embraced the tradition, including South Alabama, where Wilcox’s sister, Kassidy, played.

A United Conference in Remembrance

The “All for Alex” weekend is about more than just the color teal—it’s a powerful statement of unity across the SEC. In 2018, all 13 SEC softball programs at the time received the league’s Sportsmanship Award for their unwavering support of Wilcox during her final season. The commitment to keeping her legacy alive continues, with players and coaches recognizing the importance of using their platform to spread awareness about ovarian cancer.

This year, Mississippi State is hosting No. 1 Texas for their “All for Alex” game, while Oklahoma and Tennessee are battling in Norman, each displaying their teal accents. Next year, host schools for the event will include Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M, ensuring that Wilcox’s story continues to be shared across the conference.

The Lasting Impact of Alex Wilcox

In addition to the annual “All for Alex” games, Mississippi State honored Wilcox permanently by retiring her No. 8 jersey in September 2018—the first female athlete in school history to receive such an honor. Her legacy continues to inspire young athletes across the country, reminding them of the strength, courage, and love for the game she displayed throughout her battle.

For Oklahoma and Tennessee, wearing teal wasn’t just a gesture—it was a statement of solidarity with a fellow SEC family member and a commitment to fighting ovarian cancer. As fans watch the Sooners and Lady Vols compete on the field, they were also reminded of a greater fight, one that extends far beyond the game of softball.

By continuing to support “All for Alex” weekend, the SEC softball community ensures that Alex Wilcox’s impact will never be forgotten.
