Sooners vs. the Field: Boston, Cal, Omaha Aim to Upset the Giant

For the 31st consecutive year, Oklahoma Softball is dancing in the NCAA Tournament. And once again, the path to Oklahoma City runs through Norman.

The No. 2 national seed Oklahoma Sooners return to Love’s Field this weekend to host the 2025 NCAA Norman Regional, with play beginning Friday, May 16. The Sooners headline a competitive four-team bracket that also features second-seeded California, third-seeded Omaha, and fourth-seeded Boston University.

Oklahoma opens regional play against Boston University at 5 p.m. CT on Friday in front of what’s expected to be another record-setting crowd at Love’s Field. The contest will be televised on ESPNU.

The Homecoming: OU Returns to Love’s Field

This weekend marks Oklahoma’s first appearance at home since sweeping Texas in front of over 13,000 fans during the final weekend of April. Since then, the Sooners shared the title of the SEC Tournament in thrilling fashion, capped by a historic comeback over No. 6/7 Arkansas in the semifinals.

Head coach Patty Gasso’s squad, now fully entrenched in SEC competition, enters May with trademark momentum. The Sooners are 243-70 in the month of May under Gasso’s leadership, including a jaw-dropping 89-8 mark across their eight national championship seasons. And with a current 38-0 record when scoring six or more runs, the Sooners’ offensive engine remains as dangerous as ever.

Scouting the Regional Field

California:
The Golden Bears, making their 36th NCAA appearance, are a battle-tested Pac-12 squad aiming for their first Super Regional berth since 2012. With solid pitching depth and a proven ability to grind out wins, Cal poses a legitimate challenge to the bracket’s top seed. Their matchup with Omaha kicks off the regional at 2:30 p.m. CT Friday on ESPN+.

Omaha:
Representing the Summit League, Omaha enters the weekend fresh off a conference tournament title and is playing in just its second-ever NCAA Regional. While the Mavericks are making their first trip to Norman, they do not lack confidence. Their 39 wins are a program-best at the Division I level, and they’ll be eager to make a statement against Power Five competition.

Boston University:
BU, the four-seed in the Norman Regional, is no stranger to the NCAA Tournament or Love’s Field. The Terriers are the dominant force in the Patriot League and are riding a 13-game win streak heading into Friday’s showdown with the Sooners. Though they face a steep challenge against Oklahoma, their scrappy, small-ball style and elite team speed could make them a pesky opponent.

Star Power: Meet the Sooners

Oklahoma boasts one of the deepest, most talented rosters in the country, led by a collection of All-Region and All-SEC honorees.

In the Circle:
No pitching duo in college softball is more decorated than Sam Landry and Isabella Smith. Landry, the SEC Newcomer of the Year and No. 1 overall pick in the inaugural Athletes Unlimited Softball League Draft, leads the nation in career wins (82). Smith, meanwhile, ranks second in that category (79) and fifth in Division I with 682 strikeouts. The pair has combined for two perfect games this season and bring postseason poise and dominance into the circle.

Offensive Firepower:
This year’s Oklahoma offense is built on balance, depth, and power. The Sooners have hit 102 home runs in 52 games — the sixth consecutive season they’ve surpassed the 100 mark. Fourteen players have gone deep at least once, and the freshman class alone has launched 46 homers.

Freshman shortstop Gabbie Garcia leads the team with 16 bombs and has already earned multiple national honors, including a pair of D1Softball Freshman of the Week nods. She’s joined by fellow slugging newcomers Nelly McEnroe-Marinas (14 HRs) and Kasidi Pickering (14 HRs), both of whom earned First Team All-Region recognition.

Veteran Leadership:
Veterans like Cydney Sanders (55 career HRs), Ella Parker (100+ RBIs, runs, and hits), and Isabela Emerling (100 career RBIs) provide postseason-tested leadership. Parker has been especially hot down the stretch, recording multiple hits in six of her last seven games and clubbing crucial homers against Texas.

Team Accolades and Honors

The Sooners were well represented on the SEC awards circuit in their debut year in the league. Coach Gasso was named SEC Coach of the Year, leading OU to a conference championship in their first season. Nine players received All-SEC honors, while six made the SEC Tournament All-Tournament Team.

OU also earned eight NFCA Midwest All-Region selections, tying a program record. It’s clear that the Sooners not only have elite individual talent, but also the depth to overwhelm opponents in every facet of the game.

Storylines to Watch

The Magic Number is Six:
Oklahoma is undefeated (38-0) when scoring six or more runs. Expect the team to prioritize aggressive early scoring to take control of games and force opposing pitchers into uncomfortable situations.

Comeback Capability:
The Sooners aren’t just front-runners — they’re finishers. The 8-6 rally over Arkansas was their 17th comeback win of the season and the largest comeback in SEC Tournament history. With a postseason-tested core, no deficit is insurmountable for this group.

Bright Lights Performers:
OU’s power hitters have delivered under pressure. McEnroe-Marinas leads the SEC with 11 of her 14 homers coming in conference play. Pickering and Garcia have likewise raised their games in marquee matchups.

Defensive Excellence:
Landry leads all SEC pitchers with 47 assists, showcasing not just her arm but her glove. Garcia and Parker both earned all-defensive team honors, and the Sooners’ team defense continues to limit opponents’ extra-base opportunities.

Final Thoughts

There’s no denying it: the road to the 2025 Women’s College World Series runs straight through Norman. Armed with power, poise, and postseason pedigree, the Oklahoma Sooners enter the regional as overwhelming favorites — but with targets on their backs.

California brings experience and grit. Omaha, a surging mid-major, comes in hungry to prove it belongs. Boston University has a winning culture and the energy of a Cinderella hopeful.

Still, the Sooners’ balance across the board — elite pitching, explosive hitting, clutch defense, and unparalleled depth — make them the team to beat.

If recent history holds, expect Patty Gasso’s squad to once again defend home turf and punch their ticket to yet another Super Regional. With the roar of Love’s Field behind them and a legacy to uphold, the Sooners are right where they want to be — in May, in Norman, and in control of their destiny.
