There was a moment early Saturday afternoon when the crowd inside Love’s Field briefly went quiet.
Not silent. Not nervous. But observant.
An errant defensive throw on the first batter of the game allowed Kansas leadoff hitter Presley Limbaugh to reach and eventually move into scoring position with nobody out. For a fleeting instant, the Jayhawks had exactly what they wanted against No. 3 national seed Oklahoma — early pressure, a chance to seize momentum, and an opportunity to make Oklahoma uncomfortable in a postseason setting.
Then Miali Guachino slammed the door.
And over the next five innings, Oklahoma looked every bit like a team rediscovering its championship identity.
Behind a dominant one-hit shutout from Guachino and another avalanche offensive performance, the Sooners dismantled Kansas 9-0 Saturday afternoon in five innings at Love’s Field, advancing to the Norman Regional championship game and moving within one victory of a 16th consecutive Super Regional appearance.
The box score tells part of the story. Oklahoma improved to 50-8. The Sooners stretched their NCAA Regional winning streak to 19 games. They outscored opponents 20-0 through their first two regional contests.
But Saturday felt bigger than statistics.
It felt like Oklahoma settling back into itself.
Guachino’s Calm Changed Everything
The most important sequence of the afternoon may have happened before Oklahoma ever recorded an out at the plate.
Kansas entered the winners-bracket matchup riding emotion after Friday’s dramatic 1-0 extra-inning victory over Michigan. The Jayhawks had confidence. Momentum. Belief.
