When he was coaching in South Bend Kerry Cooks recruited Grant Blankenship to play defensive end for the Irish. Now Cooks is in Norman, as Oklahoma’s secondary coach, and Blankenship is enrolled for the fall semester.
A 6-5/278 end from The Colony Texas, Blankenship will be eligible to play for the Sooners next season and will have two years remaining. As a freshman, in 2014, he recorded twelve tackles and a sack while making an appearance in eleven games, but in 2015 he saw action in just three games and recorded only one tackle.
Blankenship was a 3-star prospect, according to Rivals, coming out of high school. Before committing to play for Notre Dame he also picked up scholarship offers from twenty-seven other schools, including Oklahoma where former OU assistant Jerry Montgomery was the front man on his recruitment.
A suspension in the spring for breaking unspecified team rules is what led to Blankenship’s transfer to Oklahoma.
