For the second game in a row the Oklahoma Sooners capitalized on a huge offensive inning and a dominating pitching performance. Fresh off a 7-1 beating of BYU, in Thursday’s second game, OU took Nebraska to task, by a final score of 6-0, on Friday morning.
Five of the Sooners’ six runs came in the second inning where Macey Hatfield led off by drawing a walk after a 10-pitch at-bat. Two batters later Kelsey Arnold reached base on an error by Nebraska second baseman Laura Barrow. The Sooners then loaded the bases when Barrow committed her second error off a grounder from freshman Alissa Dalton.
With the bases full, Caleigh Clifton drew a walk, to score Oklahoma’s first run,.before Shay Knighten battled through an 11-pitch at-bat to draw a bases-loaded walk of her own.
With he Sooners leading 3-0, Niclole Pendley sent an RBI single to right field, driving in Dalton. Sydney Romero ended the scoring with a two-run single, making it 5-0 after two innings.
Oklahoma’s final run came in the top of the seventh when Knighten produced her second RBI of the contest.
From the circle, Freshman Mariah Lopez made her OU debut by making her first career start.She went three innings, allowing one walk and two hits while holding the Huskers scoreless. Junior Paige Lowary then took over to earn her first win (1-1) by fanning three and allowing just two hits. Paige Parker then completed the shutout by striking out two batters over the final 1.2 innings.
The Sooners will wrap up their trip to Mexico with #13 Washington at 3:30 PM on Saturday.
