The Oklahoma Sooners collected an 11th straight victory on Sunday afternoon while downing the Illinois-Chicago Flames. Opting to throw both Paige Lowary and Paige Parker on the afternoon, OU secured a second shutout over the weekend. The win moves the Sooners to 20-4 on the year.
Scoring early, Nicole Mendes crossed the plate on a two-out single from Shay Knighten. However, it was Fake Aviu who put Oklahoma firmly in control of the game. Stepping up to the plate in the bottom of the third to face UIC’s Elaine Heflin for the second time on the day. Seeing a pitch, Aviu swung the bat. As the ball sailed over the fence, the sophomore tallied three RBI driving Nicole Mendes and Caleigh Clifton home.
Holding a 4-0 lead at the top of the fourth inning, the Sooners continued to lean on the pitching staff to carry them to a six inning win. From that point on, the offense continued to find holes expanding the lead. Yet, the Flames never found an answer to the riddle.
Lowary picked up a fifth win of the season after 5.2 inning worth of work. Surrendering just two hits, the transfer recorded three strikeouts to a single walk. Needless to say, the program continues to flash a level of depth that many expect to carry them to the WCWS Finale once again. Standing in the way next, Arizona prepares for OU in Long Beach, California on March 14th followed by Long Beach State.
The trip begins a six game stint in the Golden State.
