Oklahoma State Cowgirls Eliminated From NCAA Tournament

Drawing a tough Regional Tournament bid, the Oklahoma State Cowgirls made the trip to Gainesville. Facing off against FIU in game one, O-State failed to score a run through five innings of play. Finally breaking to door open, Vanessa Shippy recorded an RBI double to score Maddi Holcomb. Up 1-0, the Cowgirls pressed on adding another run in the same inning. With three outs to go, Brandi Needham produced a complete game shutout sending OSU into the winner’s bracket where No. 1 Seeded Florida awaited.

The Gators made quick work of the Cowgirls in game two sending OSU down with one life remaining. Finding themselves with a mental advantage over Florida International from the previous meeting, OSU posted a second shutout against the program. Advancing to the Regional Final by a score a 5-0, OSU knew who and what was waiting for them.

Preparing to fight to remain alive, Brandi Needham secured her second shutout in Gainesville opening the window for the offense. Again, Holcomb got the ball rolling with a single. Moments later it was Shippy ripping a double up the middle. The hit pushed Holcomb across the plate in the sixth inning — a run that proved to be a game deciding score. Oklahoma State completed the impossible, downing the top seeded Florida in front of a Gator friendly crowd.

With growing confidence, O-State needed one more win to shock the college softball world. Yet, those hopes seemed quickly dashed as Florida homered off Shea Coats in the bottom of the first inning. The shot over the wall put OSU in a 2-0 hole immediately while the coaching staff opted to make a pitching change early.

Unfortunately, it apparently didn’t matter who the Cowgirls threw as three different pitchers — including Needham — failed to keep the opponent off the board. The end result was a 5-0 loss and elimination from the NCAA Tournament.
