On Tuesday, the Football Writers Association of America presented a list of names to keep an eye on throughout the duration of the season for the Outland Trophy. Each year, the award is claimed by the nation’s top interior lineman.
Despite 2017’s winner named amongst the list of hopefuls, numerous others stand in the way of a repeat including eleven players from the Big 12 Conference. Included in the eleven are Ben Powers, Bobby Evans, and Dru Samia. What’s interesting is that all three currently play for the Oklahoma Sooners which speaks volumes of the depth within the program.
As a group, the trio possesses 82 games of starting experience. However, Offensive Line Coach Bill Bedenbaugh seems most impressed with the progress of Evans.
A bit to the north, Marcus Keyes represents the Oklahoma State Cowboys as a member of the watch list. Earning 26 starts over the course of his career, Keyes possesses the talent and experience to make an impact in various ways this season. With the predicted switch to a heavy rushing attack, the presence of the offensive line must be felt every weekend.
The stage has been set.
