Oklahoma Softball stepped into the realm of ranked competition on Thursday when they played #21 Kentucky in their opener of the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational. The result was similar to those produced last week in Arizona though.
Junior pitcher Mariah Lopez was finally tagged for a run when UK’s Lauren Johnson sent a solo home run shot over the right field fence in the top of the first. That would be it for the Wildcats on the scoreboard though as Oklahoma would get to cranking it in the third.
Sydney Romero went yard in the bottom of the third with a three-run blast that cleared left field. An inning later it was Caleigh Clifton leaving the park to give the Sooners a 4-1 lead.
OU plated four more in the bottom of the sixth, capped by a walk-off double by Romero that scored Clifton for the final run.
Niclole Mendes, Eliyah Flores, and Grace Lyons all came home prior to Clifton’s final crossing of home plate.
It was Oklahoma’s fourth-consecutive run-rule victory going back to last weekend’s appearance in the GCU Kickoff Invitational.
The Sooners will play Notre Dame next in the Invitational with the first pitch coming around 6:00 PM (CT).
