Strong pitching and powerful hitting highlighted Oklahoma’s home softball debut on Friday as the Sooners opened up the Courtyard Marriott Tournament against #23 Oregon State and #11 Louisiana.
Mariah Lopez pitched six shutout innings against Oregon State to pick up her seventh win of the season. Shannon Saile threw the final inning to preserve Oklahoma’s 3-0 over the Beavers.
The offense came in the second, third, and fourth innings when the Sooners plated a single run in each frame. Freshman Grace Green came home on a sacrifice fly by Lynnsie Elam in the second and the Sydney Romero blasted her 40th career home run in the third. Romero’s solo home run was followed by an RBI double from Jocelyn Alo, scoring Audrie LaValley, in the fourth to complete the three Oklahoma runs.
It was just a good, complete game all the way around. To us, that builds confidence for the entire team because that is the way we play. They haven’t felt that in a while, so it’s good to get back on that page, especially when we’re playing two really good teams.Patty Gasso via SoonerSports.com
In the nightcap, Giselle Juarez only needed five innings to put away the Ragin’ Cajuns thanks to a three home run effort by Oklahoma’s lineup.
Juarez struck out six batters and allowed just one run off five hits to improve her season record to 6-0. Fale Aviu, Shay Knighten, and Sydney Romero all backed up the All-American hurler with a home run each in the 9-1 route.
The Sooners will host rematches against Louisiana and Oregon State Saturday at 2 and 4:30 p.m. CT, respectively.
