The Oklahoma Sooners improved to 19-2 on the season with a pair of victories on Saturday, including a shutout against Grand Canyon University to mark their ninth of the season.

Oklahoma 5 – Drake 2

Junior pitchers Giselle Juarez and Shannon Saile combined to strikeout 14 batters in the early game as Oklahoma defeated Drake by a final score of 5-2. It was the second-highest total strikeout count by the Sooner pitching staff this season. Juarez was responsible for ten K.O.’s of her own, producing her third double-digit strikeout performance of the season.

Saile struck out four batters in two innings of relief to pick up her second save of the season.

Eight different Oklahoma batters recorded a hit in the early game as the Sooners plated three runs in the bottom of the second and two more in the fifth to secure the win.

Oklahoma 1 – Grand Canyon 0

In the nightcap it was a solo home run by Fale Aviu that gave Oklahoma the 1-0 advantage in a pitcher’s duel against Grand Canyon.

Mariah Lopez struck out eight batters and allowed just two hits in 5.1 innings of work to improve her season record to 8-1. Lopez was spelled by Saile in the sixth and the junior picked up where she left off against Drake. Striking out four of the five batters she faced, Saile picked up her second save of the day and third on the season.

Aviu’s bomb came in the bottom of the second inning when she took an 0-1 pitch deep to left field for the only run of the game. It was her third home run of the season.

The Sooners currently have a 40-game home winning streak going which is the second longest in program history. They’ll wrap up their weekend on Sunday with a rematch against Northwestern. Oklahoma blanked the #25 Wildcats 7-0 on Friday night.

First pitch for Sunday is set for 1:00 PM (CT).
