Not much changed for Oklahoma as they began conference play Saturday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas. Strong pitching and timely hitting propelled the Sooners to a 5-1 victory over Texas Tech as the quest for an eighth consecutive Big 12 title got under way.
After both teams swapped runs in the top of the first, Oklahoma was able to jump in front for good in the top of the third off a Nicole Mendes triple that scored Shay Knighten and Grace Green.
An inning later Fale Aviu crushed the Red Raiders spirit with a two-run homer to left field to put OU up 5-1.
Strong performances from the pitching circle kept Texas Tech limited to just the one run in the opening inning. Giselle Juarez bumped her season record to 12-0 by pitching 5.2 innings. She was responsible for the first inning run but held the Red Raiders to just three hits while striking out six batters.
Shannon Saile closed the game by holding Tech without a hit over the final 1.1 innings and striking out three of the five batters she faced.
Oklahoma and Texas Tech will play the second game of their series with Texas Tech on Saturday with the first pitch expected at 4:00 p.m. (CT).
