2019 Big 12 Football Power Rankings | Week 3

Week 2 of the college football season saw the Big 12 go 5-3 with Iowa State and TCU having a bye. The biggest game of the week saw Texas fall at home to LSU. Kansas and West Virginia saw ugly losses while the rest of the conference beat up on a bunch of cupcakes.

Needless to say, it shouldn’t be unexpected for things to stay the same in our Power Rankings. Below is our consensus rankings along with a few thoughts from each of the writers.

Mark

1. Oklahoma | The Sooners went out and took care of business against South Dakota. Now they go on the road to take on a bad UCLA team.

2. Texas | The Longhorns lost a hard fought game that was turned into a shootout. DBU gave up 471 yards through the air. I look forward to see if the Texas defense can improve on that in Big 12 play. If not, I doubt they stay very high in the power rankings. However, I felt like they played well enough to not move down this week. Rice should be a nice break before they face OSU.

3. Baylor | The Bears handled UTSA 63-14 and are going into a bye week. OSU didn’t look sharp enough for me to move them past them quite yet.

4. Oklahoma State

5. Iowa State

6. TCU

7. Kansas State

8. Texas Tech

9. West Virginia | The mountaineers had a very poor showing against the Missouri Tigers. The offense gained a total of 171 yards and turned the ball over 3 times. It’s going to be a long year the Mountaineers. They host NC State this weekend. Hopefully they put up a better fight at home.

10. Kansas | I wanted so badly to move them up to 9 after watching West Virginia lose the way that they did. Unfortunately, Kansas couldn’t score more than a single touchdown against Coastal Carolina and lost 12-6. It doesn’t get easier for Kansas when traveling to Boston College on Friday the 13th.

Zack

1. Oklahoma | The Sooners did what was expected (and then some) to South Dakota. The offense is rolling, the defense LOOKS improved, and they are the team to beat in the Big 12.

2. Texas | I have a hard time dropping the Longhorns after a close loss to a tough team like LSU. Nobody else has looked good enough to pass them just yet, but that could change very quickly.

3. TCU | I can’t drop the Horned Frogs just because they didn’t play, but they might not stay top 3 in the conference for very long.

4. Oklahoma State

5. Iowa State

6. Baylor

7. Texas Tech

8. Kansas State

9. West Virginia | What was supposed to be a close game against Missouri turned into an embarrassing blowout, and the Mountaineers just might find themselves in the 10-spot soon.

10. Kansas | All the Jayhawks had to do to move up was defeat Coastal Carolina, and they couldn’t even do that. They might not win another game this season.

Rich

1. Oklahoma | The Sooners handled business as expected against an FCS opponent over the weekend. However, the defense is slowly rounding a corner. Recording a few turnovers, this group has the makings of a national contender.

2. Oklahoma State | The Cowboys are the benefactors of a couple of events. Yet, Spencer Sanders appears to be the real deal. While there’s still work to be done, OSU is playing the part of a dark horse with two 50+ point games to start the season.

3. Texas | Facing the best opponent of any conference player this past week, the Longhorns were handed their first loss of the season. Refusing to quit, UT is still a force to be reckoned with moving forward.

4. Baylor

5. Texas Tech

6. Kansas State

7. Iowa State

8. TCU

9. WVU | An atrocious outing against Mizzou leaves more questions than answers. The Mountaineers could easily slip into the 10 spot if things don’t improve quickly.

10. Kansas | After a bit of hope, the Jayhawks suffered an unexpected loss at the hands of Coastal Carolina — a program that has never beaten a Power 5 school before.

Craig

1. Oklahoma | The Sooners looked essentially perfect against South Dakota. However, that’s not saying much. Despite playing a poor opponent in week two, Oklahoma still looks like the team to beat in the Big 12.

2. Texas | The Longhorns suffered a loss in the Game of the Week against LSU. While they held their own against the SEC, it looks like the Longhorns have some big questions on defense. In my opinion, Texas remains the next best team in this conference.

3. Oklahoma State | Spencer Sanders showed out once again this week against McNeese. Everyone is still waiting to see what this team can do against a real opponent. That being said, they look like a Big 12 contender through two weeks of football.

4. Iowa State

5. Baylor

6. TCU

7. Kansas State

8. Texas Tech

9. West Virginia | The Mountaineers looked awful against Missouri in week two. No offense, no defense, no energy on the field. This was a bad performance for West Virginia.

10. Kansas | The Jayhawks had their first chance at not being the worst team in the conference for one week after the West Virginia loss. However, Kansas blew it in a 12-7 loss to Coastal Carolina. Do I need to say more?

Matt

2. Oklahoma | The Sooners did exactly what they were supposed to do against an FCS opponent. Now, let’s see what they do on their first road trip of the season.

2. Texas | I’m not going to punish the Longhorns for losing to the #6 team in the nation. I am however, going to raise an eyebrow at the number of passing yards Texas gave up to LSU.

3. TCU | Frogs were on a bye week last week.

4. Baylor

5. Oklahoma State

6. Texas Tech

7. Iowa State

8. Kansas State

9. West Virginia | I was totally wrong about the Mountaineers. I expected them to win at Missouri and move them up in this week’s poll. Kansas losing to Coastal Carolina is the only thing that kept me from dropping them to #10.

10. Kansas | Yeah, that good feeling after a win didn’t last long in Lawrence.
