Setting the Stage
Oklahoma State is riding into Austin hot after a 3-0 start to the season. The Cowboys have not really been tested, though, as they have handily defeated Oregon State and Tulsa on the road and McNeese State at home. Their matchup today with the Texas Longhorns could easily be a season-defining moment.
The Longhorns are 2-1 with their only loss coming to the LSU Tigers in a shootout that was decided in the final moments. In that game, the highly-touted Texas defense, particularly the secondary was picked apart from start to finish, which means Oklahoma State might be able to do the same thing today.
The Cowboys have won the last 4 meetings with the Longhorns and have not lost in Austin since 2008. Since Mike Gundy took over as head coach in 2005—the year that the Longhorns won the national title—Oklahoma State has had a better overall record (124-59) than Texas (123-61).
Past storylines go out the window, however, and today is all that matters. The Longhorns are slight favorites, but this could be another shootout that goes down to the wire.
