Fact: In November of 2013 Oklahoma running back Damien Williams was dismissed from the team.
Also Fact: That has been water under the bridge for quite some time now.
As the Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up their Super Bowl win on Sunday night a debate broke out on social media as to whether the one-time Oklahoma back could still be considered a Sooner. The antagonists in the debate were stating that Oklahoma fans only wanted to claim Williams because of the Super Bowl run, the rest of Sooner Nation was enligtening the world to the bond that the San Diego, California native still has with the program.
There was no shortage of defenders to the Sooner Nation’s claim that Williams was very much still a part of the family. Fans, media members, former teammates and players all staked the claim that #26 was still a part of the Crimson and Cream Brotherhood. However the most notable, and resounding, comment about Williams didn’t come through social media.
Cale Gundy recruited and coached Williams at Oklahoma and told the Athletic’s Jason Kersey that he still has a relationship with the former Sooner star and talks with him every weekend.
That should pretty much sum it up. Williams still is and always will be a Sooner. He also should have been Super Bowl MVP but that’s a whole different story.
