Caleb Williams has been hitting the books more than the recruiting trail over the last week. In his most recent blog entry, posted this morning, Williams talks about focusing on finishing out the school year more than anything else over the last week. Then he announced that he’s narrowed his school choices down to three options.
The announcement eliminates Clemson and Penn State while keeping LSU, Maryland, and Oklahoma in the running. I never really thought Penn State was in on Williams, nor do I think the Maryland is either but we’ll get to that. I did think that Clemson was potentially rising in the Williams Sweepstakes, and I spoke about that during last week’s podcast. Clearly I was wrong about that but the overall premise of my idea remains intact, this is a two-team race.
With all due respect to the Maryland football program, it makes no sense to have them involved in this decision outside of the fact that they are the home team for Williams. That said, Williams has talked a lot about his desire to win championships and only two of the three final teams are in position to make that kind of run with him as the signal caller. Maryland is on the outside looking in here but they have the nostalgia factor for the kid from D.C.
That said, this race is ultimately down to LSU and Oklahoma. The Tigers may be the defending national champions but that won’t cause any Sooner fans from doubting Lincoln Riley when it comes to recruiting quarterback talent.
