Oklahoma Baseball | Nationals Select Cade Cavalli In First Round

For the third time in the last seven years Oklahoma has had a player selected in the first-round of the Major League Baseball Draft. On Wednesday night the Washington Nationals selected pitcher Cade Cavalli with the 22nd pick of the first round.

Cavalli was dominant in the shortened 2020 season, making just four starts in which he compiled 37 strikeouts and only five walks in 23.3 innings pitched. Most notably he fanned eleven Arkansas batters, with no walks allowed, in five innings of work at the Shriners College Classic. The 2020 Big 12 Preseason Pitcher of the Year also struck out nine batters against Illinois State.

For his Sooner career Cavalli posted a 9-7 record with a 4.09 ERA for his career, including a 6-4 mark and a 3.54 ERA over his last two seasons.

He joins Jonathan Gray (#3, Colorado – 2013) and Kyler Murray (#9, Oakland – 2018) as first round picks from Oklahoma in the last seven years. The Sooners have had a total of five players drafted during that time.
