As an Oklahoma fan I gotta be honest, Oklahoma State scares the crud out of me in 2020. With the trifecta of Chuba Hubbard, Tylan Wallace, and Spencer Sanders the Pokes seem to be loaded with their best team since 2011. Several writers, including myself, had placed the Cowboys in the Big 12 championship game with Oklahoma as the opponent. However, our friends at 247Sports are saying don’t make plans for Bedlam 2.0 in Big D just yet.
In their newly released list of most overrated teams for each conference, 247 has Oklahoma State listed for the Big 12.
“Texas could easily be considered for this spot, but out of fear of sounding unoriginal and boring, I decided to go with Oklahoma State. I don’t know what it is about the Cowboys that I just don’t believe in. I mean, if your favorite team was facing them, you wouldn’t be scared at all. They’re frequently a solid team, but almost never an insanely good team.”247Sports
In my opinion Texas should be more considered for this spot, they should be locked in. The Longhorns are in a position where it is virtually impossible to live up to expectations. Texas fans have been screaming conference champions in August and then celebrating a 7-5 season with a minor bowl win in December for a decade now. Yet you can guarantee they’ll be right there in the mix of all the preseason rankings and accolades yet again this summer.
Oklahoma State is entering a season with hope. Hope that they can brush aside some in-house strife this summer and take the field in solidarity this fall. Hope that the trio of superstars can stay healthy through the season. Hope that, based off last year’s season performance, they can unseat their in-state rival and become the new Kings of the Conference.
There’s reason for hope in Stillwater. I have yet to see the reasoning for the hype coming out of Austin, Texas.
One of those teams in the second-tier of national title contenders this season, the Cowboys welcome back nearly every starter off a team that won eight games a season ago and get the rare luxury of returning top players at quarterback (Spencer Sanders), tailback (2,000-yard rusher Chuba Hubbard) and wideout (2018 Biletnikoff winner Tylan Wallace). What will that mean for Mike Gundy’s veteran team? 247Sports Director of Scouting Barton Simmons is projecting the Cowboys to appear in the College Football Playoff, the first national analyst — that we know of — to do so this summer.
“My Oklahoma State pick gets more tenuous by the day given Mike Gundy’s insensitivity and the resulting turmoil within the Oklahoma State locker room,” Simmons writes. “If the team can stay together, and maybe even grow stronger through some of this adversity, the pieces are there for it to win the Big 12.”247Sports
