Cullen Montgomery is Oklahoma’s only offensive lineman commitment for the 2021 recruiting class but expectations are high that it won’t remain that way. One of the nuggets of information that may have slipped under the radar this week was a crystal ball prediction for 4-star offensive tackle Savion Byrd to come join the Sooners.
While Bryce Foster and Tristan Leigh are the top names out there in terms of Oklahoma’s offensive line targets, Byrd plays with the same tenacity and just straight nasty that Bill Bedenbaugh turns into high-quality NFL draft picks.
At 6-5/265 the Duncanville, Texas standout has earned 21 scholarship offers but seems to be focusing on LSU, SMU, Texas, and Oklahoma. The Mustangs have long been thought to be heavy favorites to land the 10th ranked offensive tackle prospect in the nation but Brian Bishop’s crystal ball prediction this week may have shown there’s a chink in the SMU armor…so to speak.
Bishop’s is the only crystal ball prediction for Byrd that doesn’t swing towards SMU but it is also the most recent prediction. Prior to him submitting his prediction on August 5th the most recent one came from Michigan Insider Sam Webb on July 2nd. Before that you have to go back to May and April for the remaining six predictions on Byrd.
One of the top tackle prospects in a loaded 2021 O-line class from the state of Texas, Byrd would frequently be mentioned in the same breath as Bryce Foster and Tristan Leigh, in terms of potential, had it not been for the fact that he played his entire junior season at defensive tackle before making the transition back to the offensive side of the ball for his final prep season coming up.
