Opting Out For 2020 | Here’s Who You Won’t Be Seeing On The Field From The Big 12

2020 has already been an odd year so we shouldn’t expect any less for the college football season. With just three of the Power 5 conferences opting to play the season, as of now, the next hurdle is going to be adjusting depth charts for players that go into quarantine or even longer in the case of a player opting out the entire season.

Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman became the latest high-profile football player to opt out for 2020. He is the most recent opt out from the SEC which leads the three Power 5 conferences with 24 total players not participating in 2020. The ACC is only eight behind the SEC with 16 players opting out and the Big 12 currently sits at just seven opt outs.

Texas leads the Big 12 with three players opting out and four other schools have one player deciding to sit. That means half of the conference has been affected by personnel not being available, including Oklahoma who lost its leading rusher.

Current List Of Players Opting Out From The Big 12

Kansas Offensive Lineman Antione Frazier

Not only is Frazier opting out of the 2020 season but he has also announced his plans to transfer from Kansas. The senior played in 12 games for the Jayhawks in 2019 and was expected to be a key figure along the offensive line this fall.

Kansas State Safety Jonathan Alexander

After playing in 12 games last season Alexander was expected to start for the Wildcats in 20202.

Oklahoma Running Back Kennedy Brooks

One of the Big 12’s top returning offensive players, Brooks is the biggest name from the conference to opt out. Coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons, he was expected to have a career year in 2020 with Trey Sermon transferring out.

Texas Defensive Lineman Marqez Bimage

In 2019 Bimage played in 13 games for the Longhorns. He would have been a key part of the rotation along the defensive line in 2020.

Texas Offensive Lineman Willie Tyler

Tyler hasn’t played for the Longhorns yet. The former JUCO product took a redshirt year in 2019.

Texas Running Back Daniel Young

Young has 139 career rushing attempts at Texas, producing 589 yards and five touchdowns.

West Virginia Safety Kerry Martin

After playing in 12 games, as a freshman, in 2019 where he recorded 50 tackles Martin was expected to be a key part of the Mountaineer secondary in 2020.
