Heading into the weekend the candidates for Oklahoma’s center position included UCLA transfer Chris Murray, sophomore to be Andrew Raym and upperclassman Ian McIver. Now we can add a new name to that battle and the Sooners might even have a frontrunner.
OUInsider (247Sports) confirmed on Saturday that Robert Congel has enrolled at OU and will join the football team. A two-year starter, Congel has logged time at left guard, right guard, and center for the Arizona Wildcats.
He will join Murray as the only two lineman on Oklahoma’s spring roster with collegiate experience at the center position, which throws multiple wrinkles in a position battle that is sure to last all the way through fall camp.
Starring at right guard for all five of the Wildcats’ 2020 games, Congel comes to Norman with two years of eligibility remaining. The 6-3/315 product from Englewood, Colorado isn’t limited to just his experience at Arizona. He actually began his career at Texas A&M where he participated in five games as a true freshman in 2017. After following Kevin Sumlin to Tucson, he sat out the 2018 season before playing for the Wildcats in 2019 and 2020. This makes him one of the most experienced offensive linemen that Bill Bedenbaugh will have in 2021.
Congel is the second offensive lineman to come to Oklahoma through the transfer portal. He joins former Tennessee offensive tackle as new faces to come through the portal in 2020.
