After not picking up a quarterback for the 2022 recruiting class, Lincoln Riley only made one offer for the 2023 class. That was to Los Alamitos, California 5-star quarterback Malachi Nelson. On Sunday Nelson guaranteed that Riley’s patience would pay off when he committed to play for the Sooners.
Rated as the #2 quarterback for the class of 2023, and the #1 player from the state of California, Nelson picked Oklahoma over offers from Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, USC and a host of other schools. In fact, the junior to be currently holds 26 scholarship offers.
At 6-3/180, Nelson only got to play in six games as a sophomore in 2020, due to covid restrictions in the state, but he did enough on the field to solidify himself as a composite 5-star recruit by 247Sports and one of the top overall players in the recruiting class by passing for 1,513 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Nelson joins Jacksonville Florida (Trinity Christian Academy) running back Treyaun Webb as the second member of Oklahoma’s 2023 class. Both made their commitments over the weekend.
