Post Week 4 Big 12 Power Rankings | Bedlam At The Top?

Conference play wasn’t in full swing last weekend in the Big 12 Conference but it certainly dominated most of the action. Baylor pulled off the upset of the early part of the season, possibly of the entire season, while Oklahoma State and Texas showed off offensive explosions that took their opponents by surprise. Here’s our power rankings after Week 4 of the college football season.

Holding Steady

Oklahoma, TCU, and Kansas all held serve this week in the rankings. The Sooners snuck past West Virginia at home while the Horned Frogs and Jayhawks lost non-conference games. It appears that we’re still not sure what to do with TCU so we held them in place and there’s really nowhere else that Kansas can go.

Moving Up

Baylor’s upset of Iowa State gives them the biggest jump in this week’s rankings. The Bears are up five spots from a week ago. Oklahoma State is up three spots after getting a Top 25 win at home and Texas moved up two spots after obliterating Texas Tech.

Moving Down

Four teams dropped this week but none of them further than Iowa State who is down five spots from Week 3. Kansas State and West Virginia each slipped three spots and Texas Tech is down one.

Individual Thoughts

1. Oklahoma – There’s a saying that is pervasive in sports and that is: “good teams find a way to win.” The Sooners finally took their only lead of the game as the clock expired while moving to 4-0. Fans may not be pleased with the nature of the victories this season but a win is a win.

2. Oklahoma State – Taking control of the game early, the Cowboys downed a ranked opponent over the weekend. Spencer Sanders final lived up to the hype with a big performance. If the play at quarterback remains at this level the rest of the Big 12 will be put on notice.

3. Baylor – Claiming a statement win over a ranked foe, the Bears are one of two big winners of the week in my opinion. Of course this was the biggest test after facing FCS opponents prior to the start of conference play. Assuming the defense continues at this clip, BU could easily find themselves challenging for a spot in the Big 12 Championship on such a down year in college football as a whole.

4. Texas

5. West Virginia

6. Kansas State

7. TCU

8. Texas Tech

9. Iowa State – Taking a significant tumble in the rankings this week, the Cyclones suffered an unexpected loss to the Baylor Bears. Sure it was a close game on the road but the program received 190 yards from Breece Hall. With that type of rushing attack, this is a group that is in trouble.

10. Kansas – Although the Jayhawks remained competitive for the first half, the second half told an entirely different story. Simply put, the situation in Lawrence will remain unchanged until the level of talent is elevated.

1. Oklahoma | The Sooners have yet to impress, really, but they still hold the most potential, and until they get knocked off, they remain at the top.

2. Oklahoma State | The Cowboys finally got the offense going against Kansas State, and the defense was impressive yet again. They’re looking more and more legit, even if they’re not perfect.

3. Baylor | I don’t really think the Bears are legit, but then again, I still think Iowa State is a solid team. The win over the Cyclones was a good one, so they moved up to no. 3 for now.

4. Kansas State

5. West Virginia

6. Iowa State

7. Texas

8. TCU

9. Texas Tech | The Red Raiders started the season 3-0, but after getting throttled by Texas, I’d say it was a sham.

10. Kansas | The Jayhawks kept up with Duke for a while, but it didn’t last long.

1. Oklahoma | The Sooners have had three calls in four games but they remain unblemished with a perfect record. There certainly aren’t a lot of comfortable OU fans right now though.

2. Texas | The Longhorns exploded against Texas Tech in what was their most impressive performance to date. With the Red River Rivalry looming in less that two weeks things are setting up very nicely.

3. Oklahoma State | Suddenly the Baylor vs. Oklahoma State game next weekend is huge in terms of the Big 12 standings.

4. Kansas State

5. West Virginia

6. Baylor

7. TCU

8. Texas Tech

9. Iowa State | How is it even possible to have the Cyclones down this far in the rankings? And people in Norman think they’re disappointed with how the season is going.

10. Kansas | Unfortunately Jayhawk fans are used to being last in football.
