Remember not too long ago when the hot take was that Lincoln Riley leaving for USC was going to kill recruiting and set Oklahoma Football back ten years? Well National Signing Day let all of the hot air out of that bubble as the Sooners added even more players to a class that was already ranked #10 nationally going into the day.
Defensive back Jamarrien Burt, defensive linemen Gracen Halton, Kevonte Henry, and R Mason Thomas, and defensive back Gentry Williams all signed with Oklahoma on Wednesday. Williams was especially important because he’s ranked by ESPN and On3 recruiting as the top recruit in the state of Oklahoma. 247Sports and Rivals have Owasso defensive lineman (and Florida signee) Chris McClellan as the top recruit from Oklahoma. All five players signed by OU on Wednesday are rated as a four-star prospect by at least one of the major recruiting outlets of 247Sports, ESPN, On3 and Rivals.
“We’ve met needs at almost every position with this group of guys,” Venables said to the media on Wednesday. “We’re incredibly excited about the talent we’ve been able to attract, but more than that we’re thrilled about the type of young people they are with their values and what they’re going to bring to our locker room as competitors, leaders, people and students.”
Oklahoma’s 2022 class remained #2 in the Big 12 but rose in the national rankings (per 247Sports) two spots from #10 to #8. The Sooners signed all four offensive positions (QB – 1, RB – 2, WR – 4, OL – 2), and all three defensive positions (DL – 5, LB – 3, DB – 4) in the class.
