It was a long day for the underdogs in Norman as Oklahoma and Texas A&M both advanced to the winner’s bracket with relative ease. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the third inning, the Aggies scored scored a run in the bottom half to tie it up, two more in the fourth and another pair in the sixth to take a 5-1 win over Minnesota.
In the second game of the day the Sooners pounded Prairie View A&M 14-0 in a run-rule shortened game. Jocelyn Alo, Grace Lyons, Tiare Jennings and Turiya Coleman all left the park as OU blasted four home runs on the afternoon. For Coleman it was her first career long-ball as a Sooner, the freshman got her moment in the bottom of the fourth when she pinch hit for Rylie Boone.
In all, nine Sooners registered a hit in the game with six batting in at least one run. It was the 36th run-rule victory of the season for Oklahoma, marking a program best for a season.
From the circle the Sooner pitchers also made history. Nicole May and Hope Trautwein combined for the team’s seventh no-hitter of the season, which sets a program record. May picked up her twelfth win of the season (12-0) by striking out seven batters while walking just one and allowing no hits. Trautwein pitched the fifth inning for OU, completing the no-hitter, in which she fanned two of the three batters that she faced.
โI think I was most satisfied with the camaraderie of the team and that is what we need. The dugout needs to be so engaged. We talk about fighting for every pitch. I felt they were engaged in every at-bat and every pitch. It felt very team-oriented tonight. Top to bottom. These guys were fired up.โ
