SEC Power Rankings – Week 6: New Leaders, New Logjams

For the first time this season, our panel was unanimous at the very top of the SEC power rankings. All three of us—Caleb, Craig, and Matt—had Oklahoma in the No. 1 spot after Georgia stumbled against Alabama, clearing the way for the Sooners to take over. In fact, Oklahoma wasn’t the only place where we found common ground. Somewhat randomly, all three of us also agreed on Arkansas at No. 15 after their blowout loss to Notre Dame and the dismissal of Sam Pittman.

Our rankings are tallied by combining each individual ballot, then averaging out the results to create the official order. That system has produced remarkable clarity the past two weeks, with no ties in the standings. But Week 6 ends that streak—LSU and Texas A&M are knotted up at No. 6, and there’s a three-way tie at No. 11 with Auburn, Mississippi State, and South Carolina. It seems fitting, really, in a year where the SEC looks as wide-open and chaotic as it has in a long time.

There are still some interesting areas of overlap among the three of us. Ole Miss climbed into the top tier across the board after their win over LSU, while Vanderbilt and Missouri both settled in the middle of every ballot. On the other hand, Georgia and Alabama continue to divide opinion—Caleb and Craig both had Georgia outside the top five, while Matt kept them in the top three. Even more drastic was South Carolina, where Craig put them inside the top 11, but Caleb slotted them all the way down at 13.

Those differences and debates are what make this exercise fun each week, and they highlight just how volatile the SEC picture remains. Check out the full rankings below to see exactly where each team landed.

Comparing Week 5 to Week 6

The biggest story moving from Week 5 to Week 6 of our Power Rankings is at the very top, where Oklahoma jumped Georgia to take over the No. 1 spot despite being on a bye week. Ole Miss also surged from seventh all the way to No. 2, while Alabama vaulted from eighth to third, signaling a major reshuffling among the league’s contenders. Georgia, meanwhile, tumbled from first all the way to fifth after being one of the most stable teams in the rankings through the first month.

Further down the board, Texas continues to climb, moving into the top four, while both Texas A&M and LSU slid from inside the top three to a tie for sixth. The middle of the pack is as crowded as ever, with Tennessee dropping slightly and a three-way tie between Auburn, Mississippi State, and South Carolina developing at 11th place. Florida and Arkansas swapped spots near the bottom, while Kentucky once again anchors the rankings at No. 16. All told, Week 6 brought the most dramatic shakeup yet, with new faces at the top and plenty of movement in the crowded middle tier.

Caleb

1. Oklahoma | The Sooners have started the season off strong. With two Top 25 wins, this Oklahoma team is lead by a suffocating defense that looks to be one the best in the country.

2. Ole miss | The Rebels looked really good Saturday against LSU. Trinidad Chambliss looked like one of the top QBs in the nation, and their defense played lights out.

3. Texas A&M | The Aggies are rolling early this season with two big wins in a row. A&M looks like they could be in Atlanta at the end of the year.

4. Texas

5. Alabama

6. Georgia

7. Tennessee

8. LSU

9. Vanderbilt

10. Missouri

11. Aubrun

12. Mississippi State

13. South Carolina

14. Florida

15. Arkansas – The Hogs got completely embarrassed at home by Notre Dame. Firing Pittman this week might add a spark to this team, but im not sure if it will be enough to get them up and going.

16. Kentucky | The Wildcats got absolutely manhandled against South Carolina. While the SEC looks to be one of the most competitive conferences in the country there is a clear bottom of the barrel team.

Craig

1. Oklahoma | Much needed week of rest for the Sooners followed by Kent State this coming week. Should be plenty of time for Oklahoma to get healthy before the Red River Rivalry.

2. Ole Miss | Ole Miss has quickly emerged as one of the best teams in the conference. Lane Kiffin is arguably doing the best work of his career, and the Rebels look unstoppable.

3. Texas | This third spot seems to be wide open but I’m going to give it to the Longhorns for now. Texas hasn’t played their best game yet, but they definitely have the talent to make things happen in this league.

4. Texas A&M

5. Alabama

6. Georgia

7. LSU

8. Tennessee

9. Missouri

10. Vanderbilt

11. South Carolina

12. Auburn

13. Mississippi State

14. Kentucky

15. Arkansas | The Razorbacks got dominated by Notre Dame and that’s now three straight losses for Arkansas.

16. Florida | The Gators had the week off, but have a tough one coming up against Texas.

Matt

1. Oklahoma | Georgia’s loss opens the door. OU is undefeated, the defense is legit, and they inherit the top spot.

2. Alabama | A win over Georgia is the kind of statement that vaults them into contender status. They’re back in the thick of it.

3. Georgia | Losing to Alabama knocks them down, but not out. Still the deepest roster in the SEC, but suddenly vulnerable.

4. Ole Miss

5. Texas A&M

6. Texas

7. LSU

8. Tennessee

9. Missouri

10. Vanderbilt

11. Mississippi State

12. South Carolina

13. Auburn

14. Florida

15. Arkansas | Brutal loss to Notre Dame followed by Sam Pittman being fired.

16. Kentucky | Another blowout loss keeps them to the bottom with Arkansas.
