Clarity at the Top, Chaos in the Middle — Week 13 Big 12 Power Rankings

With two weeks left in the regular season, the Big 12 landscape has finally sharpened into focus — at least at the very top and very bottom. For the first time in weeks, our panel produced zero ties, giving us a clean and decisive No. 1 through No. 16. Even more notable: we were unanimous on five rankings, including the entire Top 4. Texas Tech, BYU, Utah, and Arizona State form a clear upper tier, and their positioning reflects the consistency they’ve shown all season long. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State once again claims the No. 16 spot without debate, extending the nation’s longest conference losing streak and cementing themselves at the bottom until something changes.

But outside of those firm bookends, things get messy in a hurry. The middle of the conference continues to be a battleground of disagreement — especially with teams like Arizona, Houston, Cincinnati, Iowa State, and Kansas State, all of whom landed in very different spots across our ballots. Those five programs remain the heart of the chaos, producing the widest variety of rankings week-to-week. On the flip side, there’s growing consistency around teams like UCF, Colorado, West Virginia, Kansas, and Baylor, who are each beginning to solidify their tiers — whether trending upward or stagnating. As we enter the final stretch, the top is crystal clear, the bottom is undeniable, and the middle remains a swirling puzzle where every remaining game still matters.

Comparing Week 12 to Week 13

The movement from Week 12 to Week 13 brings more clarity to the Big 12 hierarchy, especially at the top, where the entire Top 4 remains unchanged and unanimous. Texas Tech continues to dominate the conference at No. 1, while BYU’s strong rebound win allowed the Cougars to inch upward in points, tightening their hold on second place. Utah and Arizona State maintain their spots as well, solidifying a clear premier tier separating itself from the rest of the league. Below that group, Iowa State and Cincinnati continue to hover in the same upper-middle range but flip positions again as the Cyclones gain separation with a two-point rise. The middle of the conference also saw some reshuffling, with Arizona making the biggest jump — climbing from a tie at No. 10 all the way to No. 5 — after a strong win and increased voting confidence across the board.

Further down the rankings, the lower half remains much more stable, though subtle shifts highlight the ongoing divide between struggling teams. Kansas, Baylor, and Kansas State each moved slightly within the 9–12 range, but none experienced a seismic change in perception. Meanwhile, UCF’s drop from No. 13 to No. 14 reflects a continued slide, and West Virginia holds firm just ahead of them. The bottom of the conference remains unchanged, with Colorado and Oklahoma State entrenched at No. 15 and No. 16. Overall, Week 13 produced fewer shocks and more confirmation: the elite teams are separating, the middle continues to churn, and the bottom groups remain locked in place as we enter the final stretch of the regular season.

Individual Rankings

Caleb

1. Texas Tech | The Red Raiders came out swinging, yet again, with a blowout win over UCF. Jacob Rodriguez proved once again he deserves to be in the Heisman race.

2. BYU | The Cougars had a big bounce back. Bachmeir looked like himself again this week leading the BYU offense up and down the field.

3. Utah | The Ute’s ground game was on full display this week, with 380 yards and 5 TD’s.

Craig

1. Texas Tech | The Red Raiders are well on their way to a Big 12 title game. They’ve just gotta get through West Virginia. Texas Tech has been dominant besides their one loss to Arizona State.

2. BYU | The Cougars bounced back from their loss with a huge win over TCU. Don’t count Kalani Sitake and his team out just yet.

3. Utah | The Utes are unfortunately on the outside looking in when it comes to the Big 12 title game. Nonetheless, it’s been a great season for Utah. They’ve got two winnable games remaining.

Matt

1. Texas Tech | A 48–9 demolition of UCF only reinforces what we already believed: Tech is the most complete team in the league. The offense is rolling, the defense is violent, and they look every bit like a playoff-caliber squad. No discussion needed — they stay at No. 1.

2. BYU | The Cougars bounced back in a big way with a 44–13 beatdown of TCU, reestablishing momentum and showing their offense is still dangerous when in rhythm. .

3. Utah | Their résumé is still spotless outside of losses to the league’s top contenders. Unfortunately, that places them on the outside looking in.

16. Oklahoma State | A 17th straight Big 12 loss — even in a competitive 14–6 game — keeps them in dead last until they finally break the streak.

Zack

1. Texas Tech | The Red Raiders continued their domination, absolutely destroying UCF. They get a week off before traveling to Morgantown to take on West Virginia, which should be an easy win. After that, it’s Big 12 Championship bound.

2. BYU | The Cougars manhandled TCU from the start, and now they travel to Cincinnati for another top-25 matchup. Beat them, and they’re one game closer to a Big 12 Championship appearance.

3. Utah | The Utes took care of Baylor pretty easily, and their Big 12 Championship hopes aren’t completely gone just yet. They need to take care of business at home against Kansas State on Saturday to keep the dream alive.

16. Oklahoma State | As much as I want to move the Cowboys up after a really close loss to Kansas State, I still need to see a win from them before I do.
