Oklahoma and Houston went from somewhat of a slug-fest in Saturday’s first game of their double-header, the second turned into a pitcher’s duel. OU’s Paige Lowary gave up just a single run, off four hits, while tossing five innings, and freshman Mariah Lopez picked up the win by holding the Cougars scoreless, while striking out two, over the final three innings.
Meanwhile Houston’s Trystan Melancon went the distance, not allowing Oklahoma’s second run until the extra frame. Melancon was on the hook for the loss but her five strikeout performance shouldn’t go unnoticed.
As in the first game of the day, the Cougars took the lead first by plating a run in the bottom of the third, but Oklahoma matched the run in the top of the fourth when Alissa Dalton knocked in Sydney Romero with a double to left-center.
The score remained locked at 1-1 until the top of the extra frame. Finding themselves in the same position for the second time of the day, the Sooners responded in like fashion. Caleigh Clifton scored Kelsey Arnold, with a single up the middle, to provide the game-winning score at 2-1.
Lopez closed out the game by producing a Houston line up, pop up, and striking out Elsie LeBeouf to clinch Oklahoma’s fourth-consecutive win. Next up for the Sooners is a trip to Palm Springs, California for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
