Offense came to life for #18 Oklahoma over the weekend as the Sooners completed a four-game sweep of Central Connecticut State by a combined score of 33-5. After a fairly close win (3-1) in the opener on Friday night, the Sooners took a Saturday double-header (13-2, 6-1) before completing the sweep with an 11-2 win on Sunday afternoon.
Posting a shutout and limiting CCSU to no more than two runs in any of the games of the series bodes well for a pitching staff that appears to be vastly improved from a season ago. Currently the Sooners have the lowest team ERA in the Big 12 at 2.14. Sophomores Jake Irvin (0.45) and Austin Hansen (0.64) are two of the top three hurlers in the conference and have a combined record of 5-0.
The Sooners are getting the job done from the plate as well though. Oklahoma leads the Big 12 in team batting with an average of .335 through the first 14 games of the season. OU also leads the conference in hits (158), runs (118), and is tied with West Virginia for the most home runs at fourteen. Oklahoma currently has four of the top ten batters in the conference, led by Steele Walker (.429) and Brylie Ware (.417) who have combined for 18 runs off 39 hits. Walker and Ware are ranked first and second in the conference in batting average.
OU will but its 12-game winning streak on the line Tuesday evening when the Sooners host Wichita State. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
