The first inning was crazy on Thursday night but the middle three innings were just insane as Oklahoma opened its four game series with Buffalo with a 16-10 win. After surrendering a run in the top of the opening frame, the Sooners posted ten runs on ten hits and were on pace for a 90 run game.
Four more spots in the bottom of the second had OU rolling 15-1 and sparked investigations into the record books, but Buffalo wasn’t quite ready to throw in the towel. Two runs in the top of the fourth gave Buffalo a glimmer of hope. Two more in the fifth swung momentum towards their dugout, and a five-run sixth put the Sooners on edge with their lead being trimmed to 15-10.
An RBI single from Blake Brewster in the bottom of the seventh scored Cade Harris, and stopped the bleeding a bit, to provide the final score of 16-10. Brylie Ware and Kyle Mendenhall each recorded a team-high three hits on the night for the Sooners. Ware was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with 3 RBI and a run scored. Despite being responsible for five of Buffalo’s ten runs, Jake Irvin improved his season record to 4-0. Only two of the five runs were earned and Irvin struck out five batters in his five-inning performance.
