The Oklahoma Sooners ran the gauntlet of emotions during their trip to South Carolina. Friday brought on the elation of victory and Saturday brought the heartbreak of extra inning defeat. Sunday though, Sunday was the worst as OU walked off the field having been hammered by Virginia Tech for 14 runs off 13 hits. The frustration wasn’t just that the Hokies put the ball in play though, it was that far too often Oklahoma didn’t execute. The Sooners produced a whopping six errors in the finale of their Baseball on the Beach experience.
Junior righty Kyle Tyler took the loss having lasted only three innings, in which Virginia Tech scored six of their fourteen runs. All six of them came in the third when Oklahoma committed four errors during the frame. Only three of the runs scored by the Hokies in the third were earned. An inning later Virginia Tech added five more runs and the route was on with an 11-0 lead.
The Sooners managed to produce some offense by plating single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, and then put up three in the ninth. Cade Harris recorded his first three-hit game as a Sooner and Steele Walker had a 2-for-5 performance from the plate.
The Sooners are home on Wednesday to play Abilene Christian at 3:00 p.m..
