It was all roses for Oklahoma Baseball on Friday afternoon as the Sooners took a 1-0 lead over Cal Poly in the bottom of the third inning and then never looked back on their way to a 4-1 win in their season opener.
OU third baseman Brylie Ware went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run and junior shortstop Brandon Zaragoza singled and scored twice.
Ware was also involved in scoring Oklahoma’s first run of the season as his base hit to right field, in the third inning, scored freshman center fielder Milan Walla from second. Walla had reached base by delivering a single in his first collegiate at bat.
After the Mustangs tied the game in the top of the fifth, off an RBI single from Tate Samuelson, the Sooners plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and an insurance run in the eighth.
Cade Cavalli drew the start for the Sooners in the opener and went 4.1 innings, allowing just the one run off six hits. From there Skip Johnson went to his bullpen where Jaret Godman, Wyatt Olds, and Jason Ruffcorn combined to hold Cal Poly to no runs and just one hit over the final 4.2 innings.
Freshman Jaret Godman picked up the win after throwing just 2.2 innings of relief.
Oklahoma and Cal Poly are slated to play the second game of their series on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM (CT).
