Oklahoma kicker Calum Sutherland made a mistake last weekend. Getting arrested for public intoxication is an offense that has bitten many of college athletes squarely in the butt, but when you’re a walk-on it’s a mistake that you most likely can’t afford.
That’s where Sutherland fits in to this scenario. Oklahoma’s starting kicker through the first three games of the season, Sutherland was benched in Saturday’s conference opener against Texas Tech in favor of redshirt freshman Gabe Brkic.
While most wrote off the kicker swap to punishment for Sutherland, Brkic, a scholarship kicker, looked to have taken the moment as an audition. After capping off a perfect first half (4/4 PATs, 2/2 FGs) with a 33-yard field goal, as time expired, it appears he passed the audition with flying colors.
According to FOX sideline reporter Jenny Taft Riley celebrated the close to the half with the following charge to his team.
“Did you see that moment? Did you see our kicker get it done?”
That could have been a message in more ways than one to Sutherland, who missed late in the first half of the season opener against Houston.
